Hey hey. Halloween is coming up and you guys know more about custom maps than I do, so I thought I'd ask for the best non official Halloween maps to put on my server this week and beyond.

I already have control point gothic and koth solytude event.

So hit me with the best. Heck hit me with any Halloween map and I'll play it and critique it.

And we're doing it again this year.

Has it been a year already since I made that D: I swear I need to get that out into RC before the end of the universe.

I've finally had the time to start testing these :) They're not very bot friendly seems to be the overall statement, but eh who plays a map with bots?

I know I've played the non Halloween event.

The second blue spawnroom needs hint nodes for the bots to even leave the room. There needs to be more blue sentry nodes. They end up making sentries in the most laughable places.

But as for the asthetic, the washed out near black and white color looks good and makes it feel totally different. The border of the left side of the map from blue spawn looks like the ground just totally ends and doesn't continue at all. Its just a minor detail that is noticable.

There are good subtle pumpkin and candle details. The map is good in terms of paths. High paths, longer paths, and the direct route. The multiple paths are rewarding. There are nice rooms with health and ammo that reward exploration.

It is an enjoyable map with other human players :) The routes and map layout are good. It feels like there are a lot of access points without being chaotic. Good class balance, there is a use for every class.

I've now got my custom Halloween map server up with maps on a faster download server so it doesn't overburden my computer :)

I'll take a look at the link Frozen suggested.

Notes on CHAPEL KOTH >>

Overall, the map feels different than KOTHs and of course looks different. There is that nice lookout point for engis and demos to spam, with only a few ways in. It becomes quite a task for someone to take over.

I felt that while chapel is a quality KOTH and a quality night map, I didn't feel it was very Halloween. There were plenty of candles, but no pumpkins and the safe rooms didn't seem as atmospheric as the official safe rooms. Perhaps that is a nitpick.

There's a good class balance here, everyone seems useful, even huntsman snipers.

CRAG >>

I played the payload Crag enough for an evaluation. I'm happy just to have a Hallwoeen payload, and it looks cool, but the only downside is the word short comes to mind. It feels short and the first point feels cramped. The majority of point 2 - 3 felt like a straight line when official maps at least have a bend in the track if the cart is going in a straight line.

I do like it, but it feels over too quickly.

PIPEBALL >>

Pipeball seems like a pleasant surprise. I didn't like the brightly lit safe rooms, but the actual arena itself looked great especially for something that could have been disasterously simple. It was a lot of derpy good fun while it lasted.

MOONLIT >>

I've played Moonlit a few times before and it is a quality map under any circumstance. It is a joy to play and would be a pleasure to master. The Halloween is subtle and the portal to the nethertrack is an extremely nice touch. The color pallet is great, its not just the same color.

The only flaw I found is from point 3 - 4 the red bots try to enter out of a closed door. Every class has a purpose. There are nice bottlenecks and paths to come from any area without being chaotic. Really enjoyable map. Tons of fun to play.

VANGARD >>

There is a ton of action in this that is borderline chaos. The point has a nice tier above it to snipe, sentry or demo bomb from. I say borderline chaos because no where is safe. There is easy access everywhere and you can often spawnkill or sneak up behind people with no one suspecting it. So you'll see several firefights before the point. Its easy to setup mini sentry traps too. See I think that's a plus in a way. Scouts can have their fun, even heavies can take the long way and spawn kill. The cameo from the Headless Horseman is also really nice and adds to the fun instead of being a chore to kill him.
