Just sorta... locking stuff out. Well, unless I'm misunderstanding it, everyone needs a ticket to play. So if you want to play with your friends, but they only want to play to get the rares, you're SOL, similar to selling map packs.

Mann vs Machine is free, Mann Up Mode is not.

You don't have to wait in the queue. You can just find a server running with MvM. That's how I got in. Granted, the server I entered had six people playing, but one dropped after a round and I took his place. 5-6 minutes compared to the 40 minutes that the queue is boasting.

you can also host one yourself, even a listenserver

gets full in under 2 minutes and random guys keep joining spec throughout the game :p

(and you can try to beat the waves by yourself :D )

Sounds like you need better friends! :|
Mann vs Machine is free, Mann Up Mode is not.
I could have worded it clearer, I know part is free. But the situation still stands, and could easily be flipped around to sound less like asshole friends.

If you have some spare change and want to do tour of duty, but your friends can't/won't, then you have a situation where someone WANTS to pay valve, but maybe they won't because it means leaving their friends out.

The main reason I think there is a cost involved is because the 'Mann Up!' mode is only on Valve servers as they obviously don't want to allow it on 3rd party servers have access where they can try and farm the gamemode for items and the tickets help towards those server costs

So from these games I have played on stegs server, thanks for hosting. I really like this mode, adds quite a lot of freshness in TF2. Soldiers and Heavies are really powerful once fully upgraded. Super scouts are super annoying.

Hasn't valve ran about 30 TF2 servers forever? and a bunch of L4D ones too? I can't really see that being the justification.

This game mode is fantastic if you can find a server that doesn't have lag issues whenever the bots show up. The upgrade system is intuitive and balanced.

Edit: Okay, so after about six or eight missions on different servers, I've concluded that it's basically impossible to get past wave 4 or so without engineers, scouts, or medics, but everyone just wants to go Heavy or Demo and spam at robots.

The difference being, those 30 servers were never enough to handle the entire userbase of TF2, but there were also dedicated servers running from day one due to operators actually knowing the game would be coming out and probably getting access to the dedicated server software ahead of time.

Not sure how Left 4 Dead works. I assume lobby players always play on Valve servers, which there are way more of than for any of their other games, and which might be virtual servers that start up and shut down based on estimated load.

But Left 4 Dead wasn't a free-to-play game. Those servers are being supported by the money people have spent buying the game. If Team Fortress 2 still cost money, I bet Mann vs. Machine would be paid DLC, and justifiably so. I mean, I'd probably fork over five to ten bucks for it, at this point.

I was hosting a listen server for multiple hours last night. I never had any "randoms" join.

Server ran like a champ.

strange. i sometimes have 2 people joined before i even choose my class :D

in any case free games are just a warmup. mann up mode is far more harder and fun

Just played MvM today, found a 5 player server. (lucky me)
So, after playing all 3 maps, I must say I love this mode. The only issue with it is Mann Up.
