After weeks of work, I quit!!

I spent 77 hours on my first map. An awsome map!! It was so cool...

And what happenned? I lost all the lights and sounds!!! And today it was the 3rd time I was making a complex ufo!

I already lost around 30 hours of work. The lights is around 20 hours.

I am tired of loosing stuff!

I appreciate all the help given to me on this forum. I had many troubles in my map and this awsome community helped me solve the problems.

I can't keep making the map... because the freaking source sdk deletes it!!!!!!!!!

Yes, thats the problem.

But now there is nothing I can do!!

I have no patience to do all the lights and sounds again.. it's a big map!!!

The greatest lesson new mappers need to learn is being taught to them in a very harsh way recently. This is caused by your own bad brushes, brushes HAVE to be convex and if you make non-convex brushes it's going to destroy your file.

Once upon a time it would just delete a mystery brush that was invalid and you'd have to find which one got deleted and replace it with a new one that wasn't invalid, now, you lose all the entities. It's harsh but auto backups and/or working in dropbox/google drive is something you need to do. That, and not making invalid brushes.

I normally see the autosave option when this erros happens but not today...

That doesn't mean the file isn't there. Go look under C:\HammerAutosave. There should be tons of stuff in there.

There is still hope!!! I found the last autosave but it says there is an invalid solid... what I do??

Invalid brushes??

I now know I have to make backups... too late.

Invalid is just another way of saying concave when it comes to brushes. Basically your UFO by the sounds of it has some pretty funky geometry (unsurprisingly) and one (or more) of your brushes has ended up slightly (or largely) concave. For highly fiddly things where there is risk of making concave brushes a model is advised.

Make a copy of your autosave. Then try opening your last autosave with the 2009 Portal SDK (you can choose this from the SDK launcher). Let it remove the invalid solid. You should still have all the entities. Make sure the brush entities still have class names (so when you look at their properties there is func_detail or trigger_multiple in the name thing). Copy them all into a new file using paste special (in the Edit menu). Save that and close this Hammer. Relaunch the Source MP version of Hammer and open the latest version of your map. Open the file full of entities and copy them back in with paste special again. You might need to redo some of them, but hopefully most are still there.

My ufo was made with a sphere... it has two different textures in the exterior. How do I solve the problem?


It is the 3rd time I am doing the ufo... it must be the problem. If I put one texture in the ufo instead of two, it will solve the problem?

Are you hollowing a sphere? Without knowing exactly what you want to do I can't help you very much, but I am guessing a lot of your problem is based around you stretching a sphere. Don't do that. Find another way to do it.

I have a sphere cutted in half and a space between the two halves with windows.

That space is enough to walk.

I don't have hollow...

The error appeared when I created a rotating disco ball inside the ufo.

I don't see what the problem is in my ufo... :S

I already have 15 of the 20 lost hours... I have most of the lights back thanks to your help guys :D

Now I have to know how to make the ufo... the ufo itself is simple... the complex part if the furnitture.

The two textures of the ufo make a chess effect.. a rounded chess. Do you think that is the problem?


I am really sorry for my bad english... I am improving it every day but I still have a lot to improve :D

It is func_detail when I am making the ufo but than I group everything(except the buttons, lights anf other stuff that I parent) and make it move.

it changes from func_detail to something I don't remember the name that makes it move.

I will try to make the ufo in a different way... now I know how to get back the other entities, loosing the ufo is not a big problem. I will try different ways until it works.
