Diner is a small KOTH map intended for pubs, not comp, though comp is free to enjoy it, test it, and tell me how bad it is. I went back to the root of KOTH as converted Arena maps and went from there.

Inspired a bit by modernist architecture from the 50s and 60s. The intention is to make this a desert town with two rival diners competing to control the prized modernist diner in the center. That is, if I get to detailing.

Structurally, the map takes cues from Harvest, Lakeside, and many 5CP mids and KOTH maps from the community that never got too far. It's not too similar to any of them, but it's not like I made this point up myself or anything.

As an experiment, this VMF is licensed for download.

From the readme.txt:
This is a rar containing the source files for the Diner project (but not the models).

This map uses custom models. Please make sure you have:

The Chairman - http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=13291
The BulletCrops Pack - http://www.minerality.fr/bulletcrops...t/bulletcrops/
The Construction Theme - http://construction.tf2maps.net/

Original alpha design by yyler. To take over the Diner project, contact him here http://forums.tf2maps.net/member.php?u=8454. To modify the map and publish it under a new name, you don't need his permission.

New: My unfinished a2 for the map, featuring smoother barns and back areas, with half the blue area missing. May or may not be helpful.

i hate koth make this arena asap

Will do, Prestige.

Updated to fix the timers.

First screenshot looks a bit like old croissant, but koth.

I'll admit Croissant was a big help, and actually so was Tachyon. But only because I was looking for ways to make the first point of Hella into a KOTH, and figured slamming the two together wouldn't be too bad (and now it's not too much like Hella at all). No lawsuits please. The rest of the inspiration is mostly in the gates, which is what will probably need the most work tbh.

Reminded me of S1 tachyon, actually. Looks cool, and I want to play it, although the two diners could be that cool and visually distinct from each other maybe.

Yeah, I planned that for the future.

This is a cool idea man, I want to make textures for it. Call me.

I will give you a ring if I get that far. Alternately, start doing paintovers and make the textures and I will make it work in Hammer. Your call on that one.

By the way, spawns are currently based on this burger place in my hometown.

So I'm looking at fixing the gates, like I thought. The garage area is going to get wider and so is the little cramped zig-zag thing. I've got no excuse for that.

Sel pointed out that there's no place for a medic to hold on the point--this is one of the things I was concerned about, not sure what to do about it. I also feel like the edge of the map opposite the point could use something to make it arguably more useful. Not sure what.

Anyone have anything they want to elaborate on? I probably won't be working on this until Sunday, so you've got some time.

I'm not sure that I liked the point. Probably I'm just bad, but whenever I was on the point I felt constantly unsafe, and always attacked from another angle. Viaduct and such has over to duck into and only two or three routes to watch. Attacking the point felt very vulnerable too, and just shamming loads of people onto the point was the only way I saw many people take it.

I think you're right. Getting to the point is a bit of a mess, as all possible options converge at effectively one spot and they are all highly visible from each other. I don't know whether I want to adjust that or add another, new route altogether.

I vote fewer routes that are wider. Things can get real claustraphobic before getting to the point.

I like this map but I'm not sure I can take it in the right direction. Gameplay around the point and in most of the map seems fine to me from the couple of tests I ran, but the point itself and the spawn areas leave something to be desired. I'm not sure what to do with it and I don't think I ever will be; I started an a2 and it just feels like hacky bullshit that will look like changes but actually won't accomplish anything.

If anyone wants to take over, let me know. There's only a couple custom materials which are publicly available and I'm a very neat mapper. It's pretty well optimized (it has to be due to the geometry). The spawns are rotated instances so you need to know the basic idea behind those (the geometry will unalign otherwise). I doubt anyone will volunteer, though.

I don't plan on developing it, but I could I have a look at the vmf anyway? I really like the metal supports on the diner, and it would be nice to what an alpha by someone else looks like.

Sure! Actually, Mangy got me thinking with this thread so I am going to do an experiment.

So... here it is.

...It would be interesting to know the validity of someone using this as a base for one of the current contests.

Well, if someone more or less recreated it, it might work. I dunno.

Hope you find it useful. I didn't bother putting anything in custom visgroups, normally don't do that for a few alphas.

I'm still convinced that a point like this could work (even though i mostly scrapped it in the case of croissant) but you have to make sure the outer route is viable. The area around the point and before the chokes to mid would be a big factor in making that happen.

As I mentioned in the chat, I'll have a go at detailing/finishing this.

Muffin ended up uninstalling TF2, so it's actually still open.

Also, in chat today we were thinking about how easily this could be spun into a zombie movie at a drive-in theater kind of thing for Halloween. It's such a good idea I almost want to do it myself!
