just a friendly warning , don't use Kruma for your map, he will never finish it for you, will show you only tiny little part that he makes in hour or so and than will start asking for money in advance with excuses like " can you please send me some money i need to pay my internet so i can finish your map" or "the US has ended Net Neutrality (means no restrictions by ISP's). so i need the money to purchase VPN in the Netherlands etc.
which you might just send to him to help him ,since you think he is making a map for you
its all lie, he will ignore you and will never answer you or your emails after u send him money, if you send him $50, he will ask for another $50 and so on

I think I heard once that there are places called "video game studios" that pay people to make maps, and they pay more than that.

I also heard there are these things called map stamps that people buy to give custom map makers money. I heard some of those people have gotten slightly more than $200.

I also heard that the average high quality map can take at least a hundred hours, maybe even several hundred, to make test and polish. Is $1/hour a high wage?

Normally I'd agree completely that the fun is in making maps, but for some people the fun is in playing maps. Some people get their fun from running the community that plays the map, and some people get their fun from administering the server that hosts the maps. And some people aren't in high school and don't have the time nor the neural plasticity to learn. Some people just aren't cut out for it either.

And for some people, the fun is in ruining it for others.

You can buy mapstamps for the official maps in the TF2 store.
