What's the correct way of displaying a multiple layer map plan?

Je-yellow,
I have started working on a map plan which consist of 2 layers- the base floor and the upper floor. After a while I thought to myself, "What might be the correct way of displaying two layers of height in one image while keeping it simple to understand for a map maker?"
While I myself would understand everything in the plan no matter how I'd display it, others, I believe, would sit in their chairs confused and be begging to be killed.
Any ideas?

I suggest using transparent color codes on different layers in-image editor.
Then use a pattern to indicate indoor-outdoor-materials.
But that's just me, and doesn't work quite as well for tf2 maps if I remember right.

Out of all the drawn plans I see get posted here, I would say only about 10% get a response. Just do what makes sense to you, make the map in Hammer, then show us.

On my failing concept art, I indicate brushes on different layers with a color. It looks fine to me, but hard to read for you.

Yeah, but how should I display the second layer (second floor) on the same plan?

I'm working with a friend and we're working with my idea, so I thought I could make an understandable plan for him.

Edit:
Oh never mind, I can simply use one pattern for the first floor and another for the second. STUPID me. Thanks Schrikvis ;)

I find that the best presentation is to just do two images, one for each layer.

just yell at him. if he still doesnt understand, yell louder

No, no, that's for talking to foreign people. For better explaining an idea, you use vague, ridiculous hand gestures.
