Smooth terrain in TF2? :)

Hey, I'm sort of new to mapping, and even more new to TF2 mapping!
So, I'm trying to make a building on a hill/elevated ground, but I can't seem to make smooth terrain. When I raise/lower ground, it goes all choppy, and I can't seem to make a smooth hill. Do you have any tips on how to make it smooth? :)
I was thinking something a bit like either this:

This:

Or this:

Thanks :)

Also, another thing, how would I make a dirt path within that hill? Like make it so there's a dirt path on a grass hill, or a more rocky path on a caynon/mountain top? :) A bit like in the pictures :)

Thanks a bunch!

Try using the sculpt tool with displacements, and smoothing it further by switching the Raise/Lower terrain brush to "Smooth" with a large radius.

Some textures have two textures built into them that they can 'blend' between. Once a face is a displacement use 'invert alpha' and 'paint alpha' to switch these textures around on either the whole face or on sections of it. You could use this to create the dirt path you're asking about. Otherwise, see if there's an overlay that would fit it.

Like other people have said, use a large radius and a small move distance when you are using paint geometry. Make sure edges are the same shape, or half the length and matching up if you want to 'sew' separate displacements, i.e. make them match up.

When working with your displacements and the paint geometry tool, make sure you have a good balance of not too high a distance, and not too small a radius. After you have it roughly the shape you want, increase the radius size, decrease the distance size and use the smooth tool. It makes a huge difference and something like your second screenshot is easily achievable.

Also, make sure your displacements are not too large or too low-power, or you won't be able to get as smooth of a surface.

Read the section on sewing to learn how to make large areas of displacements without having to make very low resolution displacements.

Thanks so much everyone! It's really helped :) I'll give it a try and show you what I can make :D Also, what's an overlay in hammer, and how do I know if something has one? So sorry, I'm new to mapping, don't know many terms :p
