Wait, are these in-game drops?

Yeah, they're showing up in-game at the same time as when you find a item normally.

Have gotten two of the trash-drop items at the same time, too.

So this is what that unannounced patch was?

Basically.

Other than this week being the fourth anniversary of the Pyro update, I'm assuming this is Valve's economist screwing with people too.

I highly doubt they brought him on board just to come up with some silly new random drops. They're likely to reveal a point to this stuff eventually.

And speaking of worthless junk, when the heck are they going to let me craft all the crates I've been hoarding already? I've almost hit a hundred!

I was just about to say the same thing, if this stuff is actually useless, then i've already got a page and a half of useless crates. What do i need lint for.

It's not Valve's fault i'm getting crates instead of weapons, hats or misc items? Darn, i should just hate myself for that too afterall then, just like everything else in life.

Crates drop on a separate timer and don't affect your other item drops. So no, it isn't their fault at all.

Well, Robin Walker did say flat-out that they were planning to make leftover crates do something at some point. Given that crates are worth, what, one twentieth of a scrap on the open market or something? ... I assume whatever they're planning to do has got to be worth more than that.

Another update today adds the random shit to the catalog, and also equipping the Eliminating The Impossible gives them new descriptions in the backpack.

Here's some of them:

Not my backpack and haven't seen the others.

Apparently one of them is "deeds of hellish cruelty etc" which is from a Sherlock Holmes story.

Well uh. None of this is interesting yet though

I mean thanks for the posts but all this stuff just makes me go "meh" for 5 seconds and then forget about it

With the older crates no longer dropping, they are apparently increasing in value.

Incase you havent seen it yet:

Equipping the Eliminating The Impossible set now shows new descriptions for the "Mysterious items"

Lint: "... the ... .hi.h ..."
Plank: "... yea. in, .e.r out ..."
Peel: "... may ... .n ..."
Fish: "Thi.k o. ..."
Diary: "... deed. of he.l.sh .rue..y ... non. .he w.se.."
Capacitor: "... such .lace., .a.d ..."
Cheese Wheel: "... go o. ... t.e h.dde. .icke..ess ..."

Translated:

"Think of the deeds of hellish cruelty, the hidden wickedness which may go on, year in, year out, in such places, and none the wiser."

Dustbowl, 2fort, and gravelpit seem to have gotten a update, too.
