Some Questions...

I have a few questions/problems/queries involving hammer...

First of all, I recently moved to a new computer to use hammer, as I have a mac now and obviously can't hammer on that so anyway.. I moved my .vmf file via USB stick from my old laptop onto my new one after I'd downloaded TF2 and SDK and then played TF2 to get all the stuff that you need for hammer to use etc etc. When I open my map all the props are pink boxes, but as I move close to them they turn into the props, so first of all how do I change this? I assume its a thing where you change the distance props are seen from or something but I can't find how to change it .

Secondly, whether this is linked or not I don't know.. But when I load up my map all the props say error and aren't showing, including the water...

So yeaah, help please! D:

Thanks!

First one is something you can change in the options. I believe it's called prop draw distance or something.

Second one sounds like maybe you're not using the Source MP config? Not sure, but it most likely has to do with a wrong setup.

Yep it's prop draw distance - let me find one of my poats there's an answer there on it and I'll plug in the link here in a sec.

If any of the props are custom, you have to make sure you migrated them as well as your vmf. Otherwise just make sure you followed the config setup perfectly. I haven't done it in about 3 years so I have no idea what it entails anymore.

Someone else might think it is something else though.

Prop draw distance is just sliders if I remember right? Increase it to a lot, unless your PC is bad.

ABS' resource pack increases it pretty far by default too.

Hmm, well I have a lot of the swamp ones, but even the normal fence ones weren't working :/
Come to think of it, only brushes were working, not including the water, which wasn't there..

I've sorted the pink boxes in hammer, its just the errors in game I don't really know where to start I guess

Its just wherever there should be a prop there are massive red letters saying error!

Although I think I've found the source, the console says this:

Detail prop model models/props_swamp/doorframe.mdl is using vertex-lit materials!
It must use unlit materials!
Detail prop model models/props_forest/sawmill_stairs2.mdl is using vertex-lit materials!
It must use unlit materials!
Detail prop model models/props_gameplay/security_fence256.mdl is using vertex-lit materials!
It must use unlit materials!

etc etc etc for ALL the props..
What are vertex-lit materials and how do I get it to use unlit materials?

I've used prop_details should I have used something else?

Is your water not showing up in game or in Hammer? If it's in game, do you have any lights? Are you running vvis?

For selecting all your models, you can go to Map > Entity Report (I think? It's in one of those menus) and filter by prop_detail, then select all the ones in the list it makes and change them via the properties window globally.

Water not showing up: if you have expensive water on 2 seperate levels (that is, the plan of the waters are not the same distance from the 0 X/Y plane) it'll cause that type of issue.

  1. Invalid Solids will cause no water visibility
  2. If you have water on multiple sides of the same brush, and/or the brush that water is on is not no-draw, then you'll get the problem.
  3. Water has to be on 1 plane of a nodraw brush
  4. I also think that water can only be on 4 sided planes (horizontally, too i think)
  5. Carving the water
  6. Hallowing the brush the water is on.
  7. Fullbright
  8. Leaks
  9. No skybox
  10. In rare cases, weird VIS errors caused by odd optimization (I had this happen once)

All of these can cause water not to show up

Hallowed water is useful during the full moon. Hollow water is just a really bad idea. Frozen wants you to avoid the latter.

Full bright might have been the problem, I'll check now, thank you!
