That is so sad. :'(
You really deserved the entry. :/

I think it is unfair. I had to finish the map on friday because I was leaving for the whole weekend and I only came back today evening. It's unfair to people like me who plan ahead and even had less time.

This deadline was announced 4 months ago, and the deadline was a week long from the start. You could have made it. What's actually unfair is giving people another chance to submit after everyone else worked very hard to meet the deadline.

Yes, you are both right. But I have also worked very hard to meet the deadline. I did a lot of last minute cramming and my compile ended up taking longer than I thought. I had to cancel my full HDR compile and just do a fast compile for the sake of getting it out there. I could have done that from the start and would have easily made the deadline.

is there a server to play the maps? I really want to play the maps and mine after all the time spent on it

- look into a tool called "pakrat"
it lets you add custom content (e.g. models, textures, etc) directly into your map's bsp file so that people don't need to download those files seperately.
otherwise everyone else will see the purple/black squares texture that gets used when that person doesn't have the textures available
Thanks Ezekal,

I'll look into Pakrat.

NB - The extra files are for the menu-thumbs and blurb before the map starts.
I'm confident there won't be any purple/black checkers in the map.
(Ie. The map will work fine without the optional extras, just thought it'd be nice to have some more custom content - also to learn how to actually do it!)

Get packbsp for orangebox and older games. It checks for the files needed automatically so you don't need to keep a list of what you are using.

Packbsp barely never works for me, and when it does it usually skips some texture files. I reccomend manually packing with packrat.

A manual list also ensures that you never forget just how much assets you are including.

True, mostly cable textures. I use a combination of pakrat and packbsp

PackBSP can manually pack things the same way PakRat can, which I do to ensure certain particle effects are packed on Hella. No reason to switch to PakRat unless you have that bug where PackBSP never even starts.

PackBSP actually corrupted a couple of my maps when I was trying to compile, I use Pakrat all the time.

As for the whole deadline thing:

The rules stated that there would be an upload thread open 1 week prior to the deadline, it was clearly stickied to the top of the contest thread. People should have planned ahead (much like Mo and myself) if they knew that they were not going to be around for the ending deadline.

Obviously though, the final ruleing on this comes down to Ravidge.

Know what I just realized? (at 11:30 pm EDT).

I didn't do that to my map. I feel like such an idiot. :p

Cheated just a titch with mediafire. Had to push an old compile as PackBSP crapped out with being unable to run BZip, of all things. 9..9
Changes lost were fairly minor in the grand scheme of things.
If anyone cares, the file pushed on time (cough, a week ago) is here.

Not like I'm going to win anyway. :p

To be fair, i went through the contest rules and there was nothing that really even implied there would be a second thread except in the upload thread itself. The OP only said that submissions would be accepted in the final week of the OP.

Still, anyone who would have been involved in the development process, such as testing, would have realised there was a submission protocol. Whilst i do feel for you, a last minute submission out of nowhere is difficult to empathise with when overall community involvement was massive.

Contact me through forum PM if you want to discuss your late entries.

I'm not a tyrant, I can make exceptions if you give me a good reason to do so. I know working on something for a long time, to just have it DQ'ed at the finishing line is though and I'd rather no see it happen at all. But these "I didn't know how to submit" claims, just 1 hour after the deadline makes me wonder why I didn't see a single post asking about it for 4 months. Naturally I would assume that there was no confusion on the matter if no one is asking about it. I have to put a deadline somewhere, and by all reason you should ask questions before it's over, not after.
The deadline was set on day one, the submissions were open for a week, submissions could be updated all through said week to allow you to have a working backup version submitted just in case.

So contact me asap, if you think you had a good reason for being late. Some of you have already done so, I got your message, just wait.

^ This.

This is why I had 2 versions uploaded before my final entry. I compiled a lot with normal settings and was always ready to upload it again. My couple of first entrys were bad and the first was even without cubemaps.

I guess some people will always have to learn the hardway.
