I wouldn't have said that was Whalerace's primary issue. The map is small, with bugger all height variation and the carts constantly ride side by side making gameplay repetitive; there's never any tactical choice between choosing to push your cart or block the enemy cart because you can do both simultaniously. Or easier yet, play sniper because you can't use the cart as cover and the sightlines are redonculous.

The water can be annoying sometimes, especially when an engineer sets up a sentry nest underwater because assaulting something underwater puts you at even more of a disadvantage. But in terms of unbalancing pyro's, yea, if you're that bothered about afterburn. But otherwise it's a non-issue. We're talking about a map that's largely underwater, not one that has a river running through the centre of it like plenty of existing maps do.

He needs a nobuild in the water, then it'd be fine. Also to fix all of the things you mentioned, those too.

Just realized that Icarus hasn't had anything new lately. I always loved his twists on gametypes.

Nothing personal but i always found his maps narrow and chokey.

I'm not even sure how he got into the A/D contest finalists with Vector, the map was beautiful but played like arse. I can only assume the majority of people voting did so visually and did very little legitimate testing.

Again, the map was beautiful, but it had terrible gameplay even with 20 players, let alone 24 or even 32.

If i'm being really blunt i blame alcohol, but that's just my opinion so i'm sure anyone who disagrees can just wipe it under the carpet.

hey vector had good custom assets and 3 full fledged rounds.
maybe not the best gameplay but the map still had a great sense of progression that resulted in an overall pretty good experience. it's pretty good if you consider there was no reference at the time for this gamemode.

So did hoodoo, that doesn't make it a good map. Just like YM understands hoodoo has it's fair share of flaws i'm sure Icarus learnt a lot from Vector. There's no need to make excuses.

Icarus once said he didn't care what people did to Coldfront because he didn't really grasp what comp players wanted out of 5CP... or something to that effect. Same idea, really.

From my understanding.... streamlined gameplay. I think fastlane is still the main custom-made map that comp players enjoy, though it's been a while since I bothered to follow a league.

Oh completely true, but what I loved was he was a conceptual level designer, most of his maps challenged the standard rules for game-types. That's why I love this pl contest, it's (hopefully) forcing people to experiment beyond the norm.
