My PackRat is freezing up when it starts scanning for textures. It will hang and become unresponsive. I've tried using PackBSP but it won't add in my .mp3 files correctly, it keeps renaming them to .mp3.wav.

Are there any other tools I can use?

If PackBSP isn't havign any trouble with the texture files, you could just pack those in with PackBSP, and then use Pakrat to put the sound file in. Something similar happened with one of mine awhile back, thats how I solved it

Before I started using PackBSP I used Pakrat, and found all my files manually, so there's always that :p

PackBSP and Pakrat both are having issues reading maps at the moment. There are other programs, such as MAN (map analyzer) that do the same thing but still work.

I haven't touched a Source game in months. I'm a terrible person. (Did they introduce support for MP3 sounds with their recent SDK engine-re-jiggering?)

Pretty sure its had support for mp3 for ages, at least ive used an mp3 file in a map over a year ago, which worked fine

I do believe mp3s need to have a specific amount of Hz before it works or something
They also don't loop, so you can't really use them in soundscapes, but you can use them with ambient_generic
