Here's a thread for stupid, crazy, or otherwise unusual map ideas, to propose and see if they are any good.

I'll start us off:

  • A 4CP map, shaped like a diamond. Both the Left and Right points are always open for capture; if you hold both Left and Right points, you can go after the opposing team's final CP. In other words, Standin meets 5CP.
  • Cart vs. A/D. BLU is trying to push the Cart to RED's base before RED captures all BLU's control points.

Thanks

A payload map where if the round ends and RED team wins, the cart explodes anyway but it doesn't do any damage except for killing nearby players.

A payload map with multiple carts right behind each other oh wait that's what I am doing at the moment.

An AD Endpoint with multiple control points on top of each other.

CTF with only one flag in the mid.

A map with dynanic intros telling the story of the level. Like a traincrash etc.

A five-CP map where the bases are right on opposite sides of the center point, with only one spawn room per team, and instead the game opens and closes different doors to keep the walk distance between points fair. I actually started on one and then got stuck because I suck at layouts.

I wanted (and still do sort of) to make a TC map that was highly grid based and pretty much all interiors where it'd pick huge, random bulkheads to close for each round, a little bit like that melee/train map thing boojum or whoever it was made where there were random doors opening and closing all the time. Except a proper map and the doors would only change between rounds.

a 5cp/koth-style map where one point each unlocks at random and the first team to 2 caps wins the round

cp_desertfortress.

Old as bricks.

I don't think the hud supports being able to do this effectively.

I got halfway through this one before grad school called me away and I lost interest:

A CTF map set up like an insane football field (not flat and open) littered with death traps, conveyor belts, hidey holes, and all other kinds of interactive silliness TF2 supports. Near spawn is each team's goal, and the enemy flag spawns nearby. The goal is to take the enemy's flag across the field and get it into their goal.

With each successive goal a team scores, the layout of the map changes to make further scoring more difficult. For instance, if Red scores a goal on Blu's side, some walls and port holes would open up on Blu's side to offer Blu more sentry and flanking options, death traps would open in Red's most advantageous routes, the Blu goal would shrink, and Red would lose some of its own defensive abilities. By the time both teams have two points, the map is absolute craziness.

I wanted to call it ctf_kritzball with the idea that it's some kind of derpy death sport to goof around in for 10-20 minute rounds, and I had most of the logistics sorted out and a decent design, but I ended up never finishing it.

How about a Tower Defense map?

That is, there's an object with HP. RED defends it, BLU tries to destroy it.

Alternately, a map based on gravity-distortion. RED and BLU's bases are on opposite sides of a cube. Stand-In style, with 4 CP. Should the map be an innie, or an outie?

Thanks

A cp map with a diamond shaped grid of 1-2-3-4-3-2-1 points per row in the grid.
