Do you play Magic: The Gathering?

I've started a steam group for people wanting to play MTG on the internet via cockatrice. It costs you nothing to play. Send me a PM if you're interested. Looking to build a good player base for good times and great games!

I don't actually play the game, funnily enough, despite reading Rosewater's design column every week. I only have a basic understanding but have had 0 practical contact with the game other than the weird kinda sloppily made Magic 2012 game they had on Steam which someone got for me. Just no way anyone else irl was gonna play MTG, not only because it's too expensive.

Anyway link to the program: http://cockatrice.de/index.php?a=news

Sounds interesting... not sure how the card database works though, doesn't explain it very well either.

It's every card in the game, even the new set that came out 4 days ago. It's pretty self explanatory. Anyone who wants to learn to play I'd be willing to teach as well. It's an amazingly fun and diverse game.

I like Magic, but don't like paying for cards or the players. I'm downloading now.

Play the hell out of it quite often actually. There's a decently big group of people in my town that play games weekly. We used to do tournaments but it's pretty much degraded down to just the usual 8 people getting together to shoot the shit and play some matches.

Lately it's been EDH, my blue black green Mimeoplasm deck wrecks shit I shit you not.

Anyway long story short I'm down to play.

Was thinking about doing this for a while. Never really got around to mentioning it forumside though. I've been playing for quite some time and my friends and I frequently use cockatrice, it's a great and simple program. Though it may be a bit overwhelming to new players, I'd recommend this to anyone who likes traditional-style games.

Though I do enjoy tournament formats, casual really is the best (most fun) way to go, yet I don't really see where we could draw boundaries (i.e. IRL you are limited to what you've got unless you drop paychecks on the stuff) on cockatrice since literally every card is available to players.

Regardless, count me in.

With a game like Magic that's not a huge issue. If you limit it to sets just like in real magic, being only able to use standard for example, everything is relatively balanced and getting any card you want isn't an issue. I've seen Standard money decks get eaten alive by someone with a Standard poor boy deck if that person knows what he's doing.

Now if we're playing Vintage that's another story... I do evil things in Vintage.

muhaha... muhahaHAHA... MUAHAHAHAHA

I'm well aware of how "balanced" Magic can get. Was just trying to say in a roundabout way that we'll have to run things on an honors system of sorts. Moxen, infinite life/damage/squirrels, and other various broken vintage combos are no fun for anyone. A house banned/restricted list may not be a bad idea.

Here's how I explained it to Konata the other day:

Keep it realistic, as in, only play cards that people could actually afford in real life. So being realistic, no moxes, no power nine, no cards that cost $300-$4000 each. Apart from that, infinite combos, really awesome combos I'm all for--because that's where the fun is. If you can pull of your infinite combo before I run over you with my little creatures, fair game, that's the fun of the game.

Unless of course, you and the person you're playing are in agreement that you're playing power nine cards and the deck is merely just for fun and for an experiment.

The whole "Standard" thing in magic, where only the last core + 2 sets or something is "legal" is just to keep it balanced because of a story perspective. I've read two magic novels, and the lore behind the whole thing is actually really cool. But it means it makes some sets more powerful against some other sets. For example, Eldrazi was all about slow gameplay and huge creatures. A set from another plane, like Mirrodin, about lots of small creatures is completely different.

Wait if we're going off cards we actually own or could feasibly get I'm going to use my Mind Sculpter with a bunch of shit from old Mirrodin.. incoming turn two wins with decks under $200 total.. Oh boy.

I'm not talking about the cost of a deck total, I'm talking about individual cards that cost $200 each, or more. That's what I'm talking about. That's not a realistic deck.

Doesn't seem fair. I have complete sets from Revised, The Dark, Fallen Empires, Homelands, Ice Age, I think I stopped at Alliances. I also have a bunch of Legends, Arabian Nights, Antiquities and some Unlimited.

What I am missing is all of the newer (um, after 1996) sets...

P.S. I think the best is that my revised set is stored in a POG binder!

As long as people aren't whipping out turn 0, 1, and 2 wins I think I'll be ok with it. I just don't want to feel like I have to pack Force of Wills to stay competitive.

Pretty much no Power Nine, Mishra's Workshops, and a few other random cards, according to Magic Traders.

Force of Will I believe is going for $75 or so, and the store I work at gets them in regularly, so they're not too rare.

One format I would love to try was from Inquest Gamer way back when. Big multiplayer game in which each person tries to build the worst deck possible, and then at the start of the game, you pass your deck to the player on your left and play. There are rules enforcing playability, like min. 20 lands, power average among creatures had to be 1 or higher, etc.

Heh, I think I remember that issue.

Probably still have it, alongside some old issues of The Duelist, in some closet around here. Always liked Inquest, if just because they talked about other games as well besides Magic.

Havn't really played MTG since... god, 2001, when I graduated high school? Played a bunch during lunch hour and behind the risers during Choir practice when we had breaks.

Picked up L5R when Gold Edition came around, and never really looked back.
