Ok, so I am completely and 100% totally new to map-making.

I am creating a two-level map, and need to "cut" a hole in a floor, so that I can make the ramps that connect the two levels.

Do I have to make 4 brushes, to surround that space, or is there a way to "cut" out a piece of a single brush? (My floor?)

you'll have to create four brushes.

ps nobody tell him about the carve tool, he has a clean soul, lets keep it that way.

one brush can never have "negative space"
meaning, when you look at a flat brush, each of its coreners, wether it is a rectangle or an octagon cannot be more then 180 degrees(measured from the inside. If you can draw a line between 2 vertexes, and that line goes outside of your brush, you have an invalid brush, and you'll need to cut it up into more.

The clip tool is very handy, learn to use it. if you have your clipping plane set, click the clip tol button again to switch what side you want to keep, or once more to keep both sides but divide the brush into two.

As Laz has explained mate, easiest and quickest but seriously do not use the carve tool, it will consume your life

IDK why everybody is so negative about the carve tool, I use it every minute. You shouldn't use the carve tool the wrong way, but like you want a hole in a brush, I cut it 2 times horizontal, than select the middle brush, and do that one 2 times vertical, ,and delete the middle brush and BAM you have your hole.
Just remember, if your wireframe looks weird, you're doing it wrong :p

I cut the brush 2 times, then select middle brush, cut it once, and drag it open :) I've always wondered how other mappers went about creating their geometry.

like this, do you put your walls on top of your floors
|_|____
[______
or your floors inside your walls?
| | ______
|_|[______
how about ceilings?

do you 45degree your corners?
| |____
|/____

instead of
| | _____

sorry for the crappy ascii art :)

That's the clip tool, sniper, and it's ok. We're talking about the carve tool.

Remember we argued about this with Chrono?

Hm I never do 45 degree corners unless I want a seamless texture (around windows etc)
I think I map quite messy, I don't have a rule from wall to floor, I see what happens... :/

to clarify again.. CARVE = BAD! CLIP = Good when done right!

just pretend the carve button does not exist you'll be much happier when your hours of mapping results in a playable map instead of a big messy jumble of crap.

well, its the best to make a wall like this:

| |___ because it wont render the 2 faces

I personally never use cut or carve, and rarely make any brushes other than rectangles. I only use 45 degree corners on outside corners where it will reduce visible faces.

Thanks to all of you for your responses...

I would like more info on the clip tool, and the cutting process. If anyone has a link to tutorial on how to use it, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, some more detail on making the 45 degree corners. I have only just learned to make the rectangular brushes, and am still getting used to working with the objects in three windows.

As I said, I am the uber-noob when it comes to mapping, so any helpful "don't-do-this,-for-fuck's-sake" tips are also appreciated.

I did see lots of threads on miscellaneous boards to stay away from the carve tool. It would seem that the tool doesn't exactly function the way it should. :)

Thank you all again.
