Hey all. I am trying to create an Unusual Effect called Voltage. I sent a 2D version to the Steam Workshop but I really need to make a 3D version. Someone told me on the polycount forums to check out this site for some tutorials or someone to help. I would really appreciate if someone could post here or add me so I could further talk about this. I really have no clue what to do so any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Here is the 2D effect I created

And feel free to add me

2 things:

  1. Tutorials and resources forum isn't the place to post this (Request Area is what you're looking for).
  2. We don't really deal with hats. Not to sound condescending or anything, but this is TF2 MAPS, not hats. To my knowledge, only one of the regulars here have even had their hat bought by Valve (AyesDyef and the Killer's Kabuto). I don't know why Polycount sent you here; I was about to send you to Polycount until I re-read your message and saw that's where you're coming from.
It's very unlikely you'll find someone here to help you, because for the most part, hats, weapons, and the like are not our forte. Sorry. :/

Matt had the plunger
Helljumper had the Crusoe and (i think) one more.
Void got partial collabaration with the incinerators insulator

That being said... maaaaybe Fubar could help, but his internet is down and I don't know when it'll be back up. Possibly facepunch could help, because I know the emporium guys did particle effects for the NotLU.

Also, moved to the requests forum.

Why can't we help him? It's particle effect stuff.

I personally don't know how to make it 3D, unless you just mean a sprite. If your image isn't a concept, and you've got that in the particle editor, it's a simple change to make it a sprite that always faces the viewer. If it's not, could be tough. I'm not so good at making particles from scratch.

This really has nothing to do with hats. Should be in the Mapping forum I think.

You know it's bad when I'm the one chiding you guys for being mean to a newcomer.

We aren't being mean... quite the opposite, we're helping by telling him where he could find help.

I didn't know where to post it, my bad.

Well if someone thinks they can and would be willing to help just please add me. I can't really go much further since I don't really know how to use the programs.

You could ask Psy, he's good with particle effects. Haven't seen him in ages though.

Here's a summary of what help I can offer, and it's not much. Just links to the sdk wiki page/s about particles; the truth of the matter is the entire system is not well documented, at least not in the sense where a person can teach him/herself without much outside information.

At best, it's a learn from experimentation area in source, and getting compliance from custom particle systems has always left me wringing my hands in anxiety.

Here's an older tutorial (overview, really), available here on tf2maps.net

http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=10506&highlight=particles
http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=10514&highlight=particles

One from interlopers.net:

Lastly, the sdk wiki page:

Good luck!

I actually learned a lot just screwing around with existing particles.

I learned I don't want to deal with them.

Yeah, last time I tried dealing with particles I couldn't even find the particle system I wanted to mess with. I'm not convinced that a certain degree of witchcraft isn't involved.

(I was able, in a completely unrelated experiment, to convert a custom giant room fire particle system into an elevator-sized version of same, but I doubt the map that was meant for will ever get finished.)
