Hope this is the place to ask questions;

I can't seem to get the right part of my image transparent as a vtf, I ran it through the GIMP, Photoshop CS4, Paint.NET and VTFEdit, turned alpha channels off and on - it keeps being white inside VTFEdit and Hammer. Any ideas?

Add this to the vmf somewhere:

"$translucent" 1

Thanks, but the problem is that the transparent parts become white in the vtf, and adding translucent doesn't fix that.

are the translucent parts translucent in .tga?

when i saved .tga in photoshop with translucent parts being made translucent with layer masks, they weren't translucent. only adding alpha channel worked

Yeah, they are.

EDIT: I think I got it now, for some reason adding alpha channels and then making it vtf only works if you add another (transparent) layer beneath it. Oh well.

Heh. I suck at making stuff like this, but my 'World Famous Non-Toxic Critter Crisps!' poster looks great!

Ok so I've got a problem.

I generated the VTF's, made the necessary VMT's, and placed them in both the SourceSDK materialsrc folder and the tf materials folder.

Loaded up Hammer, went to select one to use as an overlay aaand.....pink/black checkerboard.

I assume it's because I made a PNG of the poster in Photoshop CS5 a few months ago, then just recently loaded it up and re-saved it as a TGA.

Any tips?

I'm having this same exact problem. Tried using vtex and VTFEdit, same results.

I took an image I wanted to turn into an overlay (originally a jpeg), expanded it to 1024 x 1024 and made a transparency out of the rest of the area I didn't need. Converted it to PNG like the tutorial says, then to TGA.

Created the VTF with both programs (separately attempts, of course.) Had everything in place and ready to go. It shows up in hammer as purple and black checkerboard.

I can at least find the image in the browser. I guess that's a start...

Any help on this one?

Edit: SIGH. Every time I break down and ask about something like this I figure it out. I messed up the VMT file.

Paint.net enthousiast here,

one of the best poster/spray tutorials around!
I'm still wondering why I appear to be the only paint.net user around here...

Because it has a horrible interface and Photoshop is p̶r̶a̶c̶t̶i̶c̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶f̶r̶e̶e̶ easy to obtain?

I've been searching the forums regarding overlays for the answer to my problem. I can't get transparent textures to function properly. Even if they are transparent there appears to be a thin white line at the border of each overlay. I use paint net to make the overlay, save it as a tga and convert it with vtex. It seems like alot of people have had this problem but I havent found a solution yet.

The links are just broken. Nine migrated his site. Your browser and operating system have nothing to do with a broken link.

I need some help. When I drag and drop the tga file to vtex.exe I get the following error.

Error.png

Does it want me to reinstall source SDK or Steam and is there a way to avoid doing either?
