Well since someone tried to steal these and attempted to gain credit for them in the steam workshop, I might decide to spruce up these old items and submit them myself. Thanks for spotting the theft as well and letting me know.

It amazes me that people actually try to do stuff like that. I mean a picture could come from anywhere, it's pretty easy for people to miss the source and even then they get caught out fairly frequently (power to the internet masses); but submitting TF2 content from the TF2 community, by a TF2 contributer, to the TF2 workshop... it's safe to say the original author isn't exactly that far from sight.

I'd like to point out alot of the people submitting stuff that isn't theirs either are just young kids trying to promote an item they like to be in-game and haven't read the T&C of submitting stuff to the workshop or don't speak English as their first language and don't realise what the workshop is really for being that stuff like the workshop FAQ on tf2.com is in english only.

God, that is one hell of a run on sentence... ("Holy Run on sentence batman!")

And I agree with this, just look at the heavy fedora, wasn't it kinda a similiar thing?

I feel bad cause I remember seeing these in the workshop and voting them up. Didn't even look at who made them (and wouldn't have known that Rexy did them originally even if I had).

Think I'll be a lot more cautious in my upvotes from now on.

No, the heavy fedora WAS Valve's model with a modified texture. When the modeler submitted the pack to Valve he TOLD them what it was. He never received any money for that item, it just fit the pack well so they used it. And he never claimed it as his own.

People that submit crap and other people stuff to the workshop is BS, but unless you have released the stuff to the public they can't attach the files anyway. It just screws up voting and spams the workshop.

I think the MAJOR issue at hand is the clearly non-defined policy in the steam workshop rules about content submission that doesn't belong to you, nor created by you. I think somewhere along the way that concept was overlooked--or at least I didn't see it when yesterday I skimmed over all the information I could find about the steam workshop.

Especially for something where the possibility of money exchanging hands may occur, it seems obvious there should be a theft-policy defined somewhere. Did I miss it somewhere?

Which brings up an interesting question — does the guy who "made" Crit-a-Cola get any money from sales of it?

I'm actually looking forward to a Christmas themed map this year, rather than the half-arsed Christmas update we got last year.

Thanks Rexy, now Valve have one less excuse to not do one, they don't even have to make health and ammot kits now!

My point was it's only a problem with models that have been released. If you put them out there for people to grab then you have to worry about it, which sucks because you can't share first...

But there have been TONS of 'rip-off' submissions already with no financial worries because someone is just posting the pictures they found on a website. Not the actual models/textures. So Valve knows and can just delete them.
Main issue being annoyance and screwing with possible votes.
There was one guy posting a tons of polycount item pics and claiming them as his own. He was reported for sure.

If your models have also been posted I guess you just have to keep a good eye on submissions and report to Valve. I'm sure they'd also fix the issue if your stuff appeared in game to someone else's credit if you had proof. Obviously a post here with a date would be good proof.
But maybe that person would still get an initial sum of money, or maybe a few sales...

I still feel that the submission site was half thought out and still a bit fuzzy and dificult to deal with. (Not being able to use anything other than the bip_head bone...)

Releasing models makes it no more or less likely for fraudulent submitters to get the item in game, Valve asks for the original source files for submissions as well as compiled which no who steals the items will have unless the original author releases the source files too. Money being handed over for an item to the someone other than the author would never happen.

It's for these kind of reason that Valve wont accept audio submissions as authentic proof that the it's the submitter own work is pretty impossible

But the author does not need to release the source files if whoever's stealing the model knows how to decompile things. :/

Textures. There's compression going on there that's pretty easy to spot if you know what you're looking for, plus they might expect the original high-res, multilayer source images (and any texturer worth their salt would have worked at a higher resolution and multiple layers and hung on to those files).
