Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe.

I like this part:

Are we gonna get free games because of this?

Well, there's usually some sort of "make good" after this kind of thing happens. Sony gave away a few games after they got hacked, so it stands to reason that Valve will do something similar. That or just give everyone some rad hats.
Valve should make in-game shirts for TF2 that say "My Steam account got hacked and all I got was this lousy t-shirt".

This bugs me. It's like Kotaku is putting the bug in people's heads that we need a free game from this. I'm a lot more concerned about ALL MY FUCKING MONEY than I am about a free video game. Fuck you Kotaku.

Sony network was down for weeks. they took forever to fix it and when they did, it was down again. Valve got an attack on their forums. and potentially elsewhere. but really phpbb forums get attacked all the time, and are rather easy to cripple and collapse. its not like steam is down. so theres no reason why we should anything free out of this. Valve hasnt denied anything, nor have they made indication that they arent working on this problem. Sony denied that anything happened at first. comparing the two situations is ridiculous.

ntm portal was just released free not too long ago, go play that if you havent.

It is damn irresponsible for Kotaku or whoever to say "Hey, free games? Wouldn't that be nice, hint hint hint?" Kotaku generally get on my wick: they make a post applauding a man who attempted to kill a thirteen-year-old who was mouthing off on xbox live- let me type that again, with relevant bolding- they make a post applauding a man who attempted to kill a thirteen-year-old who was mouthing off on xbox live.

Also, i havent been on spuf for months. They can have my password.

Edit: Don't change what you said to make me sound like an ass...
Sorry, you're just too fast. That was one of my edit-5-seconds-after-post things... I actually do them a lot and nobody notices. :p

To be on topic, I agree that starting the idea of free games was retarded, but I do hate everything about that brand of sites.

applauding a man who attempted

Not to sound mean, but I heard he choked him to death.

On a lighter note (though not that much seeing as tis about the hack), I'm not too worried, I just hope they get everything sorted so I can moan on the forums again, as I have really missed my daily check of the Counter Strike global offensive forums, to see if there's any news on that early october Beta.
