Hammer suddenly moves at 1FPS

Since the Steam forums are down I'm looking for help with a problem that popped up just today. I was innocently mapping away, placing an areaportal in a doorway, and suddenly when I tried to move in the 3D view the camera had gone all jumpy and the view only updated about once a second. Using everything else is absolutely fine. I don't think it's to do with the amount that's on-screen because I opened up a larger, complete map to check against my smaller, incomplete one and the performance drop was actually less noticeable on the larger map.

Here's a video to better demonstrate what's going on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbOWLDtkdBM

I've tried refreshing the Source SDK content and nothing has changed. Even if I switch the 3D view to flat, untextured mode there is zero performance increase. The FPS rate is so bad that I physically can't move around my map accurately enough to continue working on it. Other games like TF2 work fine with no performance difference so I don't think it's my graphics card, especially as free look without moving is smooth.

Is there an echo in here?

The only thing I can tell you is that it might end up just randomly going away by itself at some point like it did for me.

Try turning radius culling off. It's the little r in a red circle on your menu task bar (the hot key is "c"). It comes automatically turned on with the latest SDK update and is the likely cause of your performance problems.

YOU. ARE. A. GENIUS.

I know what I did as well - I tried to type "static" into the entity box but hadn't clicked on it properly so all my keystrokes got registered as hotkeys. I toggled off the weird effect you get when you press "i" but didn't know about radius culling. What does it even do anyway?

It works in TF2 now though. It culls like a cordon box depending on the size of your view distance.

Which still begs the difference on how it's any different from the regular draw distance setting you can set in your options panel, which doesn't lag the editor the fuck out.

I can only imagine that Valve have super computers in their studio which they update every 6 months, even my current generation quad core i7, 4MB RAM GTX460 PC lags the fuck out. OK maybe 4MB isn't exactly the best, but really...

If you're looking at Portal Prelude's boss map, expect extreme lag. I'm STILL figuring out how they did the circles and the pushing.
