just an FWI I do pay taxes (i have a job), though just the income tax (still live at home). And I spend at least an hour, if not two hours everyday just sitting here learning about politics, I consider myself better informed than half the Americans out there, including the Occupy movement people. I use the Drudge Report (http://www.drudgereport.com/) to get my news, and it usually has up-to-date current events 1-2 days before all the big names (CNN, NBC, Fox). while you guys might think me stupid, it's just that those 3 are so biased against everything non-liberal that the average person who watches the news 10 minutes a day doesn't know the difference between fact and fiction.

I got in trouble the other day, you want to know why? Because I was using critical thinking; we read an excerpt from Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and we had to write a paper of our reaction... the teacher stressed that he didn't want us to have homework, and that we should finish it in class. I thought something just wasn't right. I was right. I go online and what do I see? Apparently 3/4 of the book was made up, plus it was written as a realistic fiction novel. My teacher never told us either of those, he preached it to us as fact. I was told off for writing about what I had learned, and then the teacher ripped up my paper and told me that "that wasn't a valid reaction," it was, I mentioned my view was skeptical, and then went back and proved myself right. He had no reason to rip up my paper.

For those who are interested, I got my information from here:http://teconom.blogspot.com/2011/04/jungle-is-fiction-and-upton-sinclair-is.html

plus I like the first comment...

I get assfucked by taxes every paycheck. I'm also privileged as hell, being a white middle class american, and I would never dream of actually complaining about paying my fair share of taxes. Unless you're anti-police, anti-firefighter, anti-military, anti-roads, anti-welfare etc. you shouldn't either.

That said, the salient point which is being so easily obfuscated in the coverage of these events, is that the number of tax loopholes that exist at the moment allow the top-top-top earners to get away with paying almost nothing relative to what they make (i.e. trust funds/investment interest/anything not strictly 'income' can bypass a lot of our tax code. Slippery bastards). The second point is that $$$ can pay for lobbiers which can then pay for a disproportionate political profile being made visible to lawmakers.

You don't have to participate in any of this shit, I'm not, but jesus christ don't go ridiculing it and raising torches over peaceful protests... And especially don't go trying to raise some LOL-worthy 'charter' on a mapping forum you scrub

I had the same thing happen once to me in my Science class. I got yelled at by my teacher for roughly the same reason you did, for critically thinking. But, I didn't go join the Peace Core, or have join up with some protest again science budget cuts.

No, I shrugged it off, and won top honors in all the science fairs at my school (the aforementioned teacher ran said fairs). And now I'm a bloody Astrophysics/Astronomy And Physics Dual major in his third year of college.

Just because you got pissed on by your teacher, and you think YOU'RE right, you have to accept that there is always someone who is smarter or better than you. If you think different, then your a bloody idiot. You don't have to prove it by joining up with some massive cause. You're young, you can shrug these things off and move on with life. You have a lot of year left, don't waste it on Politics or the Occupy Movement unless you are 100%, absolutely, without a doubt in your head, heart, or vital organs, certain that it is something you want to follow.

TL;DR: Frozen got pissed on by teacher: He got over it and didn't join a crazy movement.

This is so off topic holy shit

But

The Jungle is fictionalized but still true. That blog's arguments don't make sense; if Progressives were trying to change the FDA regulations, why did Roosevelt (a Progressive leader) try to stop them? The propaganda here isn't even internally consistent. Besides that this is something that happened over a hundred years ago and isn't relevant here anymore.

If I was Terwonick's teacher I'd be pissed off too. He completely missed the point. I'm glad Terwo brought it up because he's missing the point of OWS as well and it tells me that Terwo probably just misses every point ever.

wait... that page links to that article about gadhafi's death with "DEMOCRACY!"...?

you know, I have nothing about the conservative mindset itself, and there are many issues with occupy protesters as well, but that is just sickening.

and may I remind everyone obama won the nobel peace prize:
President Barack Obama hailed the lifting of the "dark tyranny" over Libya after the new government confirmed Muammar Gaddafi had been killed, issuing a warning to other dictators in the Middle East – and particularly Syria – that they could be next.
truly the words of a nobel peace prize winner eh?

but more importantly...

the majority of them even admit there are huge problems but like to feel superior by insulting complainers

I consider myself better informed than half the Americans out there, including the Occupy movement people. [...] the average person who watches the news 10 minutes a day doesn't know the difference between fact and fiction.

I got in trouble the other day, you want to know why? Because I was using critical thinking [...] I thought something just wasn't right. I was right. [...] I mentioned my view was skeptical, and then went back and proved myself right. He had no reason to rip up my paper.

just a quick psychological hint - someone likes to feel superior here (otherwise why mention the teacher story at all in this?)

if you started this to find support and feel better for some reason, I'm sorry we can't deliver. no offense, just a friendly reminder that you don't have to feel bad for any of this if that is the case or anything. I just get the impression there's something else going on here

Pretty much what Rexy, Mangy, Trotim and Yyler have said.

I get frustrated about the 53% crap and i got frustrated over this thread. Don't just look at what the 99% movement is doing, look at why they are doing it. Billions of USD go missing and into the pockets of select individuals or corporations that should have been recycled into the countries wealth, i don't know much about the US side of things, but as Wankhouse already pointed out, this is nothing new in the EU/UK. 6 Billion GBP was owed to the UK treasury in taxes by the multi-national corporation Virgin Media and thanks to interventions on David Cameron's part (leader of the Conservative party, good friend of Rupert Murdoch and now our Prime Minister) they walked away only paying ~20 million of those taxes whilst the rest of the cheque was picked up off the back of low income families.

We bail out the bankers, we bail out the politicians (also see the expenses scandals). People aren't complaining about having to pay for having their garbage picked up on a weekly basis, they're complaining that they're consistantly being taken advantage of. That the only solution is ever "tax the masses" when billions of dollars go missing else where "in the system" that should be accounted for, with which taxing the low income families wouldn't even be necassery.

This dude seemed to have a bunch of info... i know it's not entirely healthy to form an opinion from one source but i've been watching msnbc and a bunch of other journalist sources that seem to have answers; whilst Fox News, notorious for it's "not" fair and balanced news throws out smear campaigns.

In the UK we have a conservative government. Basically, republicans. A bit less redneck, maybe.

They're cutting hospitals. They're cutting schools. They're trying to privatise the NHS- our socialised healthcare. They're trying to privatize our schools. They tried- i am not kidding here- to sell off our forests to developers. They've introduced laws allowing universities to TRIPLE their fees. They cancelled a grant to video games developers. They're cutting spending on childcare and support for young mothers.

They're talking about reducing taxes for millionaires.

You would not believe how incredibly behind OWS i am.

You know i'd totally forgotten about this. This was also moments after the student riots. Talk about reopening a wound in the side of your citizens; i garauntee they'd have had millions marching in London over it. When the student riots happened i wasn't involved, even though i was a student myself at the time. But i'd have totally made a physical presence in protesting this move by the government of the proposed sale of our forests. There was abslutely no benefit to the masses in it and everything for private investors. They said we'd save a whole bunch on council taxes for not having to keep the maintainance up; but the savings turned out to be 23p (22.6p) annually for the average home owner.

What I got from this story:
"Terwonick, your homework is to write your reaction to To Kill A Mockingbird/The Lord of the Rings/Lord of the Flies/Prominent Fiction Novel."
"No, it's fiction."

As for that Declaration, I see nothing in there that, if passed, would cause our country to be destroyed and/or torn apart.
