With over 2000 maps to download here, why are there only three CTF maps ever played?

My favorite game is CTF and invariably the only maps ever being played on servers it seems are 2Fort, Doublecross, and Turbine. Occasionally there is Sawmill and Well.

With over 2000 maps here, it seems like there would be more variety in maps being played at any given time.

You have to consider this first; All of the maps you mentioned are stock. This means no one has to download them before jumping on the server. Some people won't even try to load a map and opt to jump on another server with a stock map playing instead. Additionally, many, many maps won't be played simply because of their quality. The fact is the maps here aren't professionally made. Don't get me wrong, this site has hundreds of fantastic maps, some of which have become stock, but I highly doubt that every single map on this site is going to be spectacular or even fun. My suggestion to you is to get involved in a servergroup and ask an admin to put some custom CTF maps into the rotation. Either that or you could make one yourself and test it on our servers :p

This is one of the reasons I asked. I'm currently making a map because there are so few CTF maps in play. I have spent an enormous amount of time on it and my zeal is waning. It's been fun making it just for the sake of making it, but as I get into the more fine tuning type things, it's getting to where I'm thinking what's the point?

CTF is fine. People will say over and over that it "doesn't work" but that's just because they're mad.

There are a number of great custom CTF maps. The consensus around here that CTF "isn't liked" is really more a product of people telling each other it sucks (like in this thread right here) and letting that idea grow unchecked than people actually playing the maps.

says the guy who kept making a ctf map and thus wouldn't admit it sucks

only good ctf is a/d ctf (and even that is just a worse version of a/d cp and could easily be converted... cp_haarp pls)

Trotim is an example of a person who is mad.

But an example I'd reach for first is ctf_wildfire. It won a contest, got played a bunch, and from what I could tell lots of people liked it and it was a lot of fun. But now that we've had a good chance to mope some more about CTF, we're not playing it much at all. Why?

I have never thought ctf is fun in any game, and having engineers doesn't really help change my opinion.

I don't because I never liked it, and once both teams know the map it turns into stalemates/deathmatch

things wrong with ctf in tf2:
spies being able to reset intel (decloaking, DR spam)
intel return timer always resets to full and is usually too long
return timer doesn't go any faster when your team defends it/no instant return
intel crits. I mean seriously? let's have cp crits next so the team capping mid can steamroll to 2nd for free
heavies
engineers

and those are all just the game itself but keep in mind you also got brilliant maps such as ctf_2fort and ctf_well

You could say that about any consistently played / popular map

sure but in cp or payload it's deathmatching around the objectives and they actually get taken/moved, in ctf you can have >10 minutes of nobody even getting close to an intel

ctf is a european football like fight to get the intel as opposed to gametypes with more frequent scoring like cp or instant gratification payload where it progresses as you touch it. not necessarily bad.

also, i just can't understand the hate on 2fort. server im regular on is a 32 player one and it comes up sometimes, plays fine and caps happen all the time.

I have never thought ctf is fun in any game, and having engineers doesn't really help change my opinion.

guy maining heavy talking about fun. amusing.

george for official

edit: ctf just doesn't have intermediate objectives/cappoints that would give you a confirmation of your progress so it doesn't seem like it's a fight for objectives. however, for example, taking over the mid in turbine is essentially equivalent of capping mid in 5cp, only difference is that it is an "unofficial" objective. if ctf would give players intermediate objectives (that are present in the game anyway) like "clear sentries here" "take control over this area", maybe it would feel more like objective based gametype.

CTF is fun when playing on map that is done well (Wildfire, Landfall, Doublecross without engineers) but it seems everyone is stuck with mindset CTF sucks, don't even try to make map for it, and that annoys me greatly.
