Map stops responding on compile

I barely made any changes to the map. I added a flagpole (no animation, just some blocks put together to look like a flag), fixed a texture not working on the server (as in changed texture), put a block in front of a house and made several blocks func_detail so the compile would go slower. What I get though is a compile which stops responding and slows down the whole computer by a lot. Even when I turn Hammer off my computer lags like hell. What happened? :bored:

Do you have a large map and are running VIS? If yes, Vis is a memory hog and will take over your machine until it's done.

That's surprising. Might be down temporarily. Check the steam forums thread and find out if he's moved the site or something. It's well worth the download.

As for odd shaped brushes, I mean anything that has lots of angles. VIS is fine with a handful of angles, but things like cylinders and intersecting angles (like rooftops) give it fits.

If you turn off visgroups on everything except world geometry, your map should look mostly square and featureless with few or no angled brushes.

If you hate that sort of compiles, the normal hammer is laggy as hell. You can always use the valve batch to see what is wrong. Hammer compile doesn't crash it just takes a long time.

Even if Hammer freezes up, I always assume it's compiling. It just takes up a lot of CPU.

You should also remember to func_detail anything that doesn't need to be a world brush. That'll save a lot of time on compiles.
