Inverse Model Fading

I'm trying to make a model fading when approaching it.
So basically you can see it only from the distance, giving it a touch of mystery somehow like a boogeyman.

However using negativ distances upon the normal fade distances as well as simply switching the values of the start and end fade distance doesn't bring up any results. Same goes for trying the "Fade Near" rendering mode.

I would be very pleased if someone knows some properties or entities which might be helpful for me to use.

I don't recall ever having tried out the Fade Near setting, however if you had the Render Mode left on Normal none of the Render FX will work. Try setting the mode to Texture and then try Fade Near.

Aside from that, all I can think of that could be done is changing the model's material itself to have a proxy that does it.

I know there's a material proxy that'll do this you could use that if it's a custom model (or model copy)

Hmm it doesn't really work with the Render-Mode. Googling it up also reveals that there seems to very less experience with this problem. I'm also not much in favor of adding external materials my map since it's already pretty much big in filesize. As long as I don't find a way to work around I probably have to cut this little feature / easteregg.
