Supposidly using the Carve tool in your map can cause this problem. Did you use the carve tool at all?

Alright then. How about the second question: Should I be hitting Yes or No?

Never use carve. Simple as that.

I found the carve tool to be very useful in making my map. I wouldn't avoid it but make sure you don't create micro-brushes (brushes smaller then one unit). Try to keep the carve simple like a square opening rather then a circle. Usually the smaller the carve is, the more likely you are to getting micro-brushes.

There's no need to use the carve tool when clip is that much more efficient.

FYI: clicking the clip tool :)clippingtool:) 1, 2 or 3 times swaps it's cutting mode (removes left of cut, removes right of cut, does not delete but keeps both sides of the brush when cut). The third option is the one you should use most of the time and creates holes in geometry just as fast and with a greater amount of control.

Carve is not bad by default but it causes so many geometry errors, "texture perpendicular to face" and "invalid solid" being the most common, that the amount of post-carve-editing required to fix it's mistakes actually makes your job harder and the potential for unnecassery errors that much greater, especially as a novice who is not used to vertex editing or applying textures in non-standard ways (not "to world"; ie carve has the tendency to create faces that have an infinite plane on a particular axis; and just as awkward, these textures are not always visible but hidden behind other geometry and take a while to find).

Valve havn't used this feature since the days of Quake, they just havn't bothered removing it yet. Any sensible mapper will avoid it.

I havn't touched it since 1999 and the bugger should have stayed on other side of the millenium.

Like when your doctor gave you your STI examination results which said you are now HIV positive.

I almost clicked it too, and I just opened this thread and tabbed out before it finished loading and then back in again. Though I had also been expecting the image to be some screenshot of something gone hilariously wrong in the 3D viewport or the game, not an error window.

It sounds like carve is buggy and needs some recoding. I have used carve, but never to cut a hole in something.

In my koth_helix map, there are ramps with rails. Those rails have posts. On the diagonal ramps, it was impossible to get those posts to end perfectly at the surface of the ramps and rails using vertex editing, so I extended the rails into the rams and rail, and then used the ramps and rail to carve the ends off of the posts. The result is the same number of brushes I had before, but with no overlap, and no gap.

Valve wont be recoding it and they wont be removing it. They admitted this themselves. It's not a necessary tool and doesn't do anything harmful by sitting there and looking ominous (so it's a waste of man power to do so).

I loved reading that, "oh yeah, no one here ever uses it so why would we bother taking it away" felt quite like "you guys use that? oh man, you guys crack me up" to me.

What they really need to do is replace carve with a 3 point clip. Why is clip still two dimensional!!!!!!!!!

Hey yeah! A 3-point clip! I like that idea!
