Can you not have both? I've played on servers that have had both.

STV, otherwise.

Last time I tried, the servers crashed within minutes of a player entering the server.

We could try it again, see if it works now after few updates to the game and replays.

I'd say STV, far more useful for map testing and I never use replays anymore anyway

I guess STV is the winner, I'll get to it.

I thought i set it up so you could change between them on the run using MacNetron's config writer :/

I agree that STV would be better but if people want Replay it should be there at the touch of a (few) button(s) should it be desired. The Replay wont turn on/STV off until the next map though so you'll have to do it before you load map X.

If i havn't set that up yet i can do that for you guys if you so wish.

I believe replay and STV need server restarts to take affect (just changing maps doesn't cut it), so afaik it can't be done on the fly.
I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

Hm, well i'll give it a shot tomorrow. Very little requires a server restart these days, STV and Replay are merely settings in the config just like any other plugin or cvar and the config is executed every time the map changes. It should work.

I'll let you know.

Source TV provides a demo file of an entire match that can be viewed from any perspective (all clients, observer points and free view). Replay is fairly limited in that it's perspectively driven by the client and limited to individual life spans.

Replay is fun and amusing but is not very useful for feedback. Especially for the authors who may want to review a match in its totality; which would include anything a replay might produce and more. A service we had provided up until the replay feature was released several weeks ago.

Oh i see, so this is what people use for Counter Strike Montages?, i have saw some of them and i always wondered how they do those camera angles and stuff...

So this works with TF2 too?.

STV works for all Source mods. CSS, TF2, DoDS.

Replay is basically a user friendly extension of the demo recording feature. Any client can record a demo by typing "record demoname" into the console, which will record the game from the client's first person perspective. STV just records it from the server's perspective.

Oh thanks again, it seems a pretty cool tool.

I picked STV because demos are really, really helpful for those who can't make the playtest to see their map being played (namely me, quite often) and it's really helpful seeing the actual match so you know how the map is flowing, rather than just relying solely on the feedback chat plugin and user posts.

Replay is just for showing off your epic ftw skills, which isn't really helpful in a map testing server.

Please don't let people change between replay and stv on the fly. If i get my map on a playtest only to have someone from a map earlier decide to turn it off would be super lame. If thats not going to happen then i'm fine with it, but it seems likely that someone might forget to turn it back on/off etc.

Keep Replays on! It's a much easier way to show people their problems in their maps and a easy way to do funny clips with a easy editor!
