So. Hello guys, I haven't posted in a long time. Anyways, I was searching up hammer lighting tutorials and I quickly learned white lighting is bad. So I was thinking for my first full map I would make a hospital or sterile themed koth map, learning techniques along the way. I really liked the look of white light, it made everything look sterile, but maybe there is another color that would fit.

Also, some map design help would be appreciated. I really am struggling with what to do, as this is my first map. I was thinking circles but then I was like what hospital has circles and what. So, yes, any help would be appreciated, as would be actual pictures of hospital layouts or something.

Go for a slightly blueish white ?

I'd agree, or maybe also try a _very_ mild yellow tinge. Fluorescent lights can have a slight tint.

With a hospital theme, there is a chance for other color palettes to accent. Rooms can have a warmer incandescent tone, or more "techy" like with lab equipment.

One thing I've noticed from newer hospitals is a real attempt to get away from the sterile feel, at least in some areas. Lobbies often have plants, big skylights, etc. Juxtaposing that with a true sterile white could work - you just don't want the white to feel like it's the only thing. The university hospital I frequently visited had lots of art on display. Things like this can help you break up the monotony.

IF you want to try something more creepy go for a subtle green tint in a dark setting because it contrasts a lot with red (blood) but I think you're mapping for TF2 so probably don't do this :p. Green is also a common colour in hospitals (green suits & rooms etc), because it is also a "relaxing" colour...

cool blue everywhere, orangeish at some special rooms
make the light verry slightly colored so you can barely tell it from white
also google imaging "hospital layout" works wonders

ohgodthanks

Yeah, thanks everybody.

I should add that hospitals definitely had a different look in the 50's and 60's than they do now. You might be able to find old pictures on Google. The only downside is many may be black/white pictures.

I always thought the spawn/resupply rooms in 2fort had a hospital feel to them. You may want to load that up and see what color/brightness values they used there and use that as a starting point.

Red and blue colors that can easily be associated with hospitals, so that should be good when it comes to designing/texturing everything.

I believe that fluorescent lights are ever-so-slightly green, not blue. It's close enough to white that your eyes cant see the difference (or maybe just barely, if you could see them side-by-side), but a camera can. I've seen nighttime city pictures in which some windows are lit green and some are orange, making it easy to see who has fluorescent lights and who has incandescent.
