Welcome to Day One of the Über Update--the biggest, most ambitious update in the history of Team Fortress 2.

We've got a lot to announce as we get closer to the update's release this Thursday, June 23rd. We've been holding one of the surprises pretty close to the vest for months now. We don't want to ruin it, but we'll give you four clues to get you guessing:


  • 1.) It IS a "Meet the" short.
    2.) It involves ONE of the two remaining classes.
    3.) It's NOT the Pyro.
    4.) It's the MEDIC.
Let the speculation begin! While you're puzzling that out, why not click over to the first of our class pack announcements: Mobster Monday. To make sure everything was as accurate as possible, we went deep undercover at the most Italian place we could find, The Olive Garden. We asked the Mafia about a million questions, none of which they understood, because our mouths were full of all the free breadsticks the Mafia gives you when you visit them (they're not such bad guys).

All that hanging out with mob guys must have rubbed off on us, because we've decided to celebrate the Über Update by giving you an offer you can't (or at least shouldn't) refuse--an unprecedented WEEK-LONG FREE WEEKEND of Team Fortress 2, starting right now!

-20% firing speed? I'm not sure that really makes the additional spinup speed which has never really been an issue for a heavy who knows how to play heavy (which may or may not include the jumping spinup).

The heavy barely deals enough damage to kill opponents in 1 on 1 battles as it is (without ambushing people pyro style).

My take on the items :

Tomislav : will be horribly nerfed within two weeks. Hopefuly. The silent spinup has potential as an idea, but everything else must be re-thought.

Shotgun : meh. I don't think it's OP or anything but the heavy doesn't really have an incentive to use a shotgun in the first place (except to screw around I mean).

Eviction notice : meh again. Don't see any reason to use that when he has plenty of better unlocks.

Enforcer : Interesting, a weapon to promote the 'combat spy' subclass. I'm not sure how big hte drawback actually is. If it's just cloak time and not decloak that sounds reasonable. Problem is, when used with the dead ringer, there is no drawback at all...

Big earner : Sounds viable to me.

This, haha. They didn't even try to keep the release date a secret. They were just like, "It comes out Thursday. So stop asking for it."

Also, I'm a big fan of the new site redesign. In my opinion it was about time for a do-over anyhow. Plus they added some really useful things like comic / asset downloads and organized everything in a much more logical fashion.

As for the actual update content, I think they did a good job of making the weapons not something I would use over the default counterparts. I'm not the person to use most unlocks strangely-- There are basically a few "useful" unlocks in my opinion such as jarate and the equalizer, but most of the other ones I use just for fun or when I'm not really playing that seriously.

On an unrelated note: I actually didn't know that the spy pack was going to be added during this update. It came as a total surprise to me D: If I'm not mistaken it was DeRosaJ's work, and the only reason I'm surprised is because he showed me that flower almost a year ago when he submitted it. Edit: Apparently it wasn't his model.

The medic reminds me of the lead guy in Disney's Atlantis, whatever his name was.

Also creepy pyro is creepy. How long till someone models it for a replacement? :D

There's so much new stuff in that screenshot alone it's incredible

I'm just saying, and I do see that there are some roofs with snow on them like it's part of the texture.

pyro is a creepy, crazy old man that enjoys wearing sombrero's, gurl hats, and moustaches. i think i'd main pyro.

Explain. Because i was under the impression HW guy wasn't used in comp because he can't deal an appropriate amount of damage (besides his lack of speed).

I've spoken to comp players about HW guys because cp_axle was supposed to bring hw guy and engi back into 5CP play and pretty much all of them said "HW guy's never kill anyone and always get raped by focus fire". Reducing his DPS by a fifth just so he can spinup quicker by milliseconds doesn't seem like a fair tradeoff.

Loving the new concept art. I'm getting a bit of a Quake vibe from some of those concepts, especially from (what I assume is) the engineer. Guess bit of a crossover from the original platform.

the DPS is 80% of sasha's, not 20%. which is about 400 DPS. I'd be okay with 50% of sasha (250) and even then meh. feels too much like a CoD gun for me to even like it. but i'll wait until i get my hands on one with it's 3 refined + unusual hat crafting combo that is sure to come out.

heavies weren't used in comp because of lack of mobility to keep up with 5CP i thought. the GRU was one idea in the competitive beta and then it got banned. good communication between comp and valve. the only A/D map they had (gravelpit), engy and heavy are used. engy more than heavy im sure as it's used 100% of the time i believe.
