$8 a month for more weapons and maps?

sounds better than $150 for a green shining hat to me

there's really no way to tell how bad this elite subscription service will be. we'll have to wait and see before we can judge, but yeah I agree that it has the power to be terrible

When have you been forced to pay $150 for a hat in order to pay the game?

@REEJ Yeah, that is what Battlefield 3 is for.

Point. I'd much rather pay for non-cosmetic stuff. Then again, being unable to pay, and so being locked out of ACTUAL content really sucks.

I could rant for ages about this, but it sums up as "What did you expect from capitalism at its most cynical?"

Well, true, but hats don't have much of an impact on gameplay, of course (except for the 5 original set hats, most of which kinda suck).
CoD is a victim of its own popularity (which I never understood anyway, I loved the original CoD and its expansion UO but the franchise turned bad to me as soon as the second game). Hopefully this will put the whole franchise to the grave so it can finally rest in peace and more innovating games can get the spotlight instead.

Or, maybe there are actually millions of suckers willing to pay a monthly fee for more of the same and I'll be forever puzzled by the state of modern gaming.

This is just Activision realizing their "Hookers and Blow Trust Fund (c)" runs a little light in between releases. It's gotten ridiculous, and I almost feel sorry for the poor guys that are stuck making the same Call Of Duty again for their entire careers.

I'm not. This is Activision's death sentence. They're going up against Battlefield 3, and frankly, they're going to lose.

I wish this were true, but I know it's not. People will buy this. Activision will make money. They will see no negatives in continuing it and continue to rape gullible idiots with disposable cash to give them more of it.

Though I agree it is a stupid way to make money, all of it is totally optional and as such I see no need to hate on it too much. If you dont need it, just dont buy it and play on!

What blows my mind is exactly this. I wish I had some sort of psychological reasoning machine that would tell me exactly why people still buy into this even though they know they are getting scammed.

Some people don't know or care they're getting scammed. They do it because they friends are or because they think "oh, what is $10 if I can get more shit."

Others say they care, and then either cave because of peer pressure or because they were full of shit in the first place.

It's not anything anyone really needs to understand. Even I've fallen victim to it (as is the case with buying Global Agenda. Ugh.) I think primarily it's peer pressure.

that's exactly why Activision knows it's gonna work
@peer pressure - they mentioned exclusive cups for clans, there you go, competitive scene has to pay

Well, they also said there will be no dedicated servers, which means competitive scene just won't happen (on pc at least).

I don't care about this game, but anytime a developer refuses to provide dedicated servers for a full-price high-budget game I cry a bit. I can't grasp the reasoning behind it.

While this is probably a valid point, but there is also teh cultural aspect. "Call Of Duty" is gaming to those who don't know what "gaming" is, which is invariably a bad thing.

Case in point, this: http://gaming.icrontic.com/article/herp-derp-ping-pong/

TL;DR : Fox news griping about how Call Of Duty gets federal funding under NEA, when in reality it doesn't.

I also don't want to hear twenty years from now how Call Of Duty is now a classic along the lines of Mario Bros. That would be kind of a downer.
