I want to create a map cycle for the server (and for a number of reasons). A proper specialised map cycle should help fill the server when we're not running events but the personal touch should really allow our servers to reflect our community as a whole; what goes on on the site and in the chat.

The idea is to be running our featured maps in rotation. That way it will be easier for people to jump onto the server and not hit an empty cp_dustbowl every time, but instead allow people to jump on and run around one of our communities premium maps with no prior need to hassle the admins or even donators. I need a little help first, though.

First of all i havn't run the featured section so i don't know the entire history of maps that have been featured (I'll poke DrP when i get the chance to see if he has kept records of this, but any help from you lot to fill in the blanks would be greatly appreciated).

Secondly Should we run official maps in our standard cycle? Some maps attract players more than others but at the same time this doesn't seem to be important here, our servers aren't for being filled 100% of the time by random pubbers so we shouldn't need to resort to 24/7 2fort. But still i'm unsure of the importance on running stock maps in rotation on our personal servers.

At the moment i have:

axle
biodome
(mirroed valve maps?)

lakeside
nightfall
haarp

crossroads
metalworks
antiquity

I could have sworn lighthouse, boundary and meridian were featured as well but i'm unsure. Anyway, on with the poll.

EDIT: I guess there are other maps like frontier and hoodoo that came from members over here, i'm not sure where we stand on having these on rotation if we only wanna limit the rotation to current features. It makes sense to include them but at the same time the rotation doesn't necasserily need to include a ton of maps. I guess it depends on whether the rotation will encourage more random casual play.

I honestly wouldn't put Meridian on there, mainly because it's tunnel syndrome like Hydro, and it's a giant download, which most people won't wait for.

Could you explain the last choice? It's confusing.

For instance in your thread you include non-featured custom maps in the rotation list. featured only would prevent developing maps like hardhat from getting into the official rotation. Some might disagree with this, i want to see what people think.

P.S The features should be fine, we feature 3 maps a month, that's almost a map a week, provided Pep's keeps an eye on it more, or allows someone else to handle it. It's a shame we missed May's set.

Yeah, I'd say include the featured maps and then add the other custom officialized maps, preferably the most recent ones (Nightfall, Lakeside, Frontier). Maybe there'll be some players then

I really don't understand the options at all, or what the 1) and 2) mean. I probably shouldn't have actually voted yet, either.

I think we should have one or two valve maps (gravelpit, badwater) but the rest custom RCs/Finals with no preference for official or not, as long as they're good maps

I'd like to see customs only, but realistically, I don't think this helps fill a server (I have to download a map before joining this server = I'm trying my luck somewhere else). It gives it flavour and will keep the right kind of players playing ("right" meaning those who share an interest in what we do). So I guess you should throw in some of the more popular stock maps too (I'd say badwater, badlands and dustbowl) though it may be better to substitute the officialized maps instead (so for example coldfront, nightfall and frontier ?), the important thing being that some of the maps should already be on any potential player's hard drive.

As for the customs being used, featured maps are a good start. I'm not sure how the voting would work ? Would you have to vote in-game for the next map or would it be a forum poll or what ?

1) and 2) were supposed to seperate the 2 individual questions which had 2 options to chose from each. You can only have 1 poll per thread.

I think Official, Community Official and Featured maps should be on the rotation. Hopefully any nice maps that are in late beta or rc will be featured anyway. It may hopefully give people the incentive to nominate maps to be featured that havn't yet because they want to play them more often and see them on the server.

And I agree that the poll is confusing.

I've always felt like our rotation should focus on the best customs we have, rather than stock maps. That's mostly just because I want to play those maps, though.

The one thing though is, if we don't play official maps, what about maps that are custom and are on our server, but then go official? Do we not play them anymore?

I think Official Community made maps, Customs that are featured, and late beta/rc maps that are good enough to be in the rotation, but not necessarily featured, would be good..

Also, I understand all the options except the final one.

These are exactly my feelings on the matter.

bumping this because i'd like to have a revote on grazr's poll to see what people opinions about what should be on our new server rotation are now that the contest is over. I think we should have official customs, featured maps, late beta and RC maps a swell as a few offical maps too.

I'd also perhaps like a vote on our sv_pure configs, I think it's crazy that for a server which is about making custom content that we don't use sv_pure 1 with a whitelist so people can use custom weapon mods too.

Put some official customs on there? Especially when some of them originated from here.

In my opinion it's pretty simple - it's tf2maps server, so we should promote maps that come from tf2maps community - no matter if they are official, featured or not featured - if they're good enough and people want to play them, why shouldn't they be in the rotation?

My idea is that at first you should put most popular community made maps, and then create a stickied thread, where someone responsible for it would propose, let's say a map per week and then people would vote whether it should get into the rotation or no, and if after a week, let's say at least 80% of voices are positive, map gets on the server.

If there are more potential good maps in late stage of developement, make it 2 proposals a week, if there are less, make it one per 2 weeks. Or it doesn't even have to be regular.
