while there is a portal map mapping site (located HERE), it is nowhere near the quality of this tf2maps site. I propose that the admins here add a separate section in showcase section for any VALVe map, or map for a mod to a VALVe game. Opinions?

That is the big Portal mapping community, and I'm sure they have/will flow right on into Portal 2.

From the looks of it, they already have.

I think that Thinkingwithportals.com will work fine with it. Maybe just make an account there. It may not seem to smooth as us because Portal never really had the chance to have their test chambers/maps to become "official" so that might be were your thought on their "caliber" are arising.

I simply dont want to join another community. It's been far, far more fun for me downloading maps by people i know from the chat, and enjoying them, than all the maps by strangers i was downloading from www.myaperturelabs.com. Thats part of the plus of this community: we're a close-knit group, and we shouldnt really need a mass exodus because the site name is "TF2".

A site is defined by the people, surely? A "Showcase other projects" section would be cool, getting feedback on stuff from people we KNOW are the shits at it, rather than having to learn our way into a new group. What if people want to map for DOTA2, do they just join a third community?

After spending the last week playing Portal 2, I too have developed an interest in mapping for Portal 2. Though I'm going to wait for the official SDK before getting stuck in.

I agree that there are other mapping sites that will cover the market nicely without having to change this site to accommodate Portal mapping also. To do it properly the site would need to become sourcemaps.net and incorporate mapping for all Valve games. It would be a drastic change, and probable one that most people here would be against.

Maybe if there is enough interest from everyone here in downing tools on TF2 mapping for a while and trying some Portal stuff, then perhaps we could have some cross mapping contest with the thinkingwithportal guys? Maybe we make test chambers and they judge them.. Maybe they could make a TF2 map (like a Koth or something not too big) and they could be judged by members from here.. Just an idea.

Another forum section wouldn't kill anyone. I know for a fact people would use it.

I would say no, that site and interlopers will probably hold the majority of P2 related stuff.

Not wanting to join another community is just lazy and you wont get anywhere near the expertise for P2 mapping advice here.

What i do want to see though is an MC forum in the VIP area.

And not wanting to join a community is part laziness, yes, but theres also a chunk of nervousness in there. I hate being new in communitites.

Stop being smelly. The primary wonder of the internet is anonymity. The secondary wonder is that nobody really cares.

I'm kinda with sword on there. If I was to go join thinkingwithportals.com and introduced myself, there may be someone I know there who doesn't like me based of whats he's seen here.

They could also overreact because they are getting an influx of tf2mappers, much like we have done to a few of the newer maps here who were coming from CSS or such.

While this website is built for team fortress i feel that it could benefit other games and lets face it, this sites one of the most superior mapping sites for valve games.

Things just keep popping into my head here...

The one side of making a new site is that there would need to be some man hours put into making it. The reason this site looks so good is because the (exluding myself) site/server staff/geit made a lot of this by scratch, in photoshop (or how ever), then coded, then I believe helped pay to upload this to a server that can run a heavy load.

So if there really really wanted a P2Maps.net, people would need to put time and effort into making it.

Then there is the who would be mods, how would we pay for the server hosting, what would we include in the forums, what are the sub forums, etc. etc. etc. These questions would have to be answered next... because it looks like people want a P2Maps.net.

EDIT: This is all assuming that the P2Maps.net is a website, not a subsection of this one. Subsection is different.

ive read through the thread, and ive heard both sides. but a section for portal 2 and other games is appropriate. some people feel more comfortable being around this community than joining a new one and being 'the new guy from tf2'.

welcome to the new section :3

I would suggest to create a sub-forum here for portal 2 maps, otherwise it will be hard to find anything, once it gets spammed.

Once it gets spammed, It will be dealt with. For now though. There's no need to split discussion further, since there's only 2 threads!
