Who listed my website on Stumble Upon?

I can't remember who told me in chat that they did it. And it turns out it's not a good thing, it's sucking up all my bandwidth. Which is really annoying when I try to apply for jobs and I have no bandwidth left.

For some reason this made me laugh uncontrollably.

Also, that sucks Rexy. :p

It really isn't funny, considering how hard it's been on me trying to find employment, and now, in order to keep doing it, I'm probably going to have to spend more money to upgrade my service for more bandwidth a month.

Okay, sorry. D: Is there any way to remove it from Stumble?

What's your bandwidth limit? I've been using http://www.slicehost.com/ and have been really happy with their customer service, bandwidth and pricing options. Best company I've had a server on so far, and I've used quite a few.

Have yet to get anywhere near my bandwidth limits... but then none of my sites have been stumbled with high traffic keywords like "TF2" or "this guy helped make Mann Manor" or whatever. Heh.

I'd assume that reporting it whenever we stumbled onto it is a bad idea...

Have you tried contacting the people behind stumble upon to get it removed?

Amusingly, I googled around and find that people have been having the same issue, but that stumbleupon won't remove your website from their listing even when you own the domain...anyway, I figured I'd try asking anyway:

Hello Alex,

Thanks very much for writing in.

StumbleUpon permits its users to share links to
Web sites that are publicly accessible. As a
result, our policy is to only remove links and
reviews to external sites if they violate our
Terms and Conditions.

If you wish to do so, you may configure your site
to refuse visitors from StumbleUpon. If your
content is on an Apache server, for example, an
.htaccess file can block or provide access for
visitors to your site according to your
preferences.

So that's a big fat no, let it be known forever what happens when you list stuff on Stumbleupon. Also, thanks to Ardy, for having yesterday already walked me through setting up a .htaccess to redirect SU users away...

Change your homepage to the goatse image, report it as violating their terms and conditions, than restore your site. If they were quick to reply to your e-mail they would likely be equally quick to respond to that kind of stuff.

Problem solved in an afternoon. Send the thank you strippers to my back door.

It's amazing how uncompromising people can be regarding the sharing of public information. There's still a responsibility regarding when and how it's used. When it directly affects your ability to find employment (negatively) and generally causes issues with your personal content such as exceeding your bandwidth limits and freezing YOUR site (that you pay to keep operational), as a result of THEIR site's activity, you'd have thought they'd be understanding enough to prevent that.

It's practically digital assault/negligence. If anyone obstructed your shop's front with vans or stalls or anything there'd be police and law suits involved. Regardless of whether it was public space being utilised.

Well, unfortunately, the .htaccess setup does not appear to be working as I keep getting more hits from stumbleupon. So apart from me spending more money to get more monthly bandwidth, I'm out of options. If you have an idea let me know.

I'd love someone to check and see if I'm doing the .htaccess correctly, just message me on steam, and I'll discuss it with you.

its silly to be angry when the public goes to your publicly available site.

Is it silly to be angry when potential employers can't view my portfolio website because I'm out of bandwidth? Because there's traffic overflow coming from StumbleUpon?

His point being, DP, is that he made the site not for the public, but for his employers. It might be a public site, but he did not intend for it to be shared around the internet.

But this is like a radio station telling people about a little corner store, and then hundreds of people flood through your store but don't buy anything, causing your actual customers to drop because they can't be bothered to fight the crowd. Yeah, it's publicly accessible, but that doesn't mean you want hundreds of random gawkers that don't give a crap about what you are selling.

It is hard enough to stand out in a huge pile of email applications as a possible employment candidate without something going wrong on your side of things. If recruiters come to a website that can't be viewed for one reason or another, they move right on along down the pile. You might as well have not even sent an application.

Does your hosting provider allow you to have subdomains and do any sort of rationing that way? So that you could have a separate bandwidth cap for "jobs.yoursite.com"?

Also, what were you trying with .htaccess that didn't work?
