I think I still have the orignial concept for luna, which was a giant empty area with a cap-point right in the middle, about 2000 units from end to end.

And nothing else.

I redid it something like 3 times, and the "final" version had:

* Displacements that opened into the void (how was i supposed to know they didn't seal areas?)
* The above didn't matter because I had the entire map in a skybox brush.
* I didn't realize that you were supposed to nodraw invisible faces until about 3/4 of the way through the 2nd alpha.
* I clipped things willy-nilly, and was a pain-in-the-ass to optimize because everything was at a wierd-ass angle.
* I used an elevator, which i got from a prefab off Fps Gamebanana.

Maybe I'll try and dig up the first concept so you can laugh at me. It was horrendous.

Making the initial skybox by making a giant brush and clicking Make Hollow
Carving to make arched doorways
Not using func_detail, ever, because I didn't know what they were

I didnt know how to use displacements.
I over-scaled like a mofo.
I expected func_details to seal.
Used invisible to clip.
Made my walls one-unit thick, I have no worldly idea why.

I once overscaled a map, by accident, to the point where it might as well have been a ratmap.

I actually looked at a video on weather effects in Hammer using a huge trigger box around the map and I tried making a spawn from the TF2 level design SDK Docs

I made pillars of water/slime/lava, and a lot of blinking colored lighting. A brush-cannon that spewed gibs and the most retarded spiral staircases ever to be imagined.

This was for hl1 though, over a decade ago.

My first maps were for Doom, so that's where I made my silly beginner mistakes, the biggest of which was making walls with zero thickness. I didn't want to waste space in the map.

I basically learned everything engine related through mistake. I had a decent sense of scale and design from the beginning, but I had a great time learning what func_details do, after trying to compile a map that had a sphere brush and a rotated building with complicated brushwork that wasn't a func_detail. It took almost an entire afternoon to compile on my old laptop, and I knew something was wrong after that.

Nodraw on displacement surfaces is something else I was guilty of.
Also, using displacements with too high of a power in situations where it wasn't necessary.
