TMP and I did this shortly after Iron Mapper. Our goal was to make a playable map in 6 hours. Yes, six. How'd it go?

Well I personally couldn't do it. The map sucked, and it was not very good detail. Things were textured, I think I made spawn pretty, but for the most part, it just went bad.

And if you were here during Iron Mapper, you'd know that Mangy and Ace didn't finish those maps in the four hours they had. They extended it. Mangy and Ace are freaking amazing mappers. If they couldn't finish, I doubt most people here will be able to.

So if you're thinking about doing this contest, be more prepared than you ever have. You will likely make either a very crappy, simple map or a not entirely sucky alpha. That's not to say you shouldn't do it. I learned a lot when in my 6 hours with TMP. But just don't think you're gonna finish a wonderful map or even get close to what you want.

Here's what I've seen as a speed-mapping contest for another game. The one organizing the contest announces when the contest will start, and at the designated time, he announces the theme for the map. Mappers then have 24 hours to make a map. How the map looks and how it plays are equally important to the judging, or maybe not equal but weighted in an agreed-upon ratio. Also, anybody who wants to enter can, not just 1-on-1. This contest seems to be well received in that other gaming community.

I've done a few iron mappers with some close friends. Always produced something eh. I always like doing this for fun, and this started with me looking around for 1 other person. Ended up getting a few people saying they'd do it so I figured I'd hold a small contest. I know what you mean though, Mangy and Ace are incredible mappers.

I prefer the "Not entirely sucky alplha" idea. If we do it as "create a fun, playable, KOTH or ctf map in 3 hours" rather than "create a RC in 27 hours", it becomes easier, more fun, a chance for a different skillset to shine, etc, etc, etc.

Also. When are we planning on doing this? The current time is not good, because a lot of people here are revising for some or other exams.

I'm voting for the 3+24 one, but i dont hugely like either of them.

How about this, we do that "Not entirely shitty alpha" idea where you get 4 hours to make just a textured alpha (Thats not really detail, just blocked out levels that aren't dev textured). You'll get judged on the layout, and how fun it is. Everyone that enters will all have their maps voted on in one huge poll and I'll get rid of the 1v1 aspect. If it leads into a somewhat of a tie with the voting the top 2 ~ 3 maps go on to get 24 hours ~ 3 days of detailing to make their map look the best. Those will get voted on and we'll have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Thoughts?

I like that idea more. It encourages people to enter, and start a new map.

Why not instead of a 1st and second place and third have best gameplay and best detailing?

I guess it'd really go down to how many people entered. 1st place gets a hat or something and the feeling of knowing you can make something good in a short amount of time haha.

Alright, taking all those suggestions I got that idea. Everyone jolly?

You're allowed to plan out your map as much as you like until the designated mapping period. Even though I'd love to give everyone the benefit of the doubt we need to have a general period to say "Ok we're starting now, you have until this time to do it then it needs to be turned in" to prevent cheating. When voting on all the maps is finished, the top 3 maps go into detailing where they're allowed a day or three. After all three maps are in, we vote once more, first place gets a simple prize.

Blocking out on paper doesn't really take more than 20 minutes, certainly not 24 hours.

Since Source is different to many other games that allow for "iron mapper" contests, you guys can step away from the iron mapper concept and take a different approach to it that will produce more likable results and allow more people to compete. Such as weekend contest, or ~7 day contest.

Friday evening to submit your game mode decision and layout. Then Saturday and Sunday to detail.

I'm sure you can find a bank holiday weekend to do it on in the next couple months. But i also agree with Sword, we're fast approaching exam time for many people and plenty of other active mappers are finishing their CP contest pieces.
