So, Smashman finished building his quadcore computer the other day, and to celebrate, I decided to make a VMF to see if he could compile it, and how long it took compared to my itty bitty Pentium 4.

He did not complete the compile.

So, a challenge to all you out there who wish to test their rigs against this beast of a VMF. I DARE YOU to download and compile, at normal settings with -staticproppolys -staticproplighting and -textureshadows. If you are truly insane, throw in -
final and -hdr as well.

benchmarkcompile.jpg

The vmf can be found here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1471205/benchmarkCompile.vmf
A mirror to a .rar with the vmf is here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1615325/benchmarkCompile.rar (courtesy of Steff0o)

If you do attempt to compile it, please post your computer specs, how long it took and what compile setting you chose.
Compile settings:
Fast : VVIS on fast, VRAD on fast.
Normal : VVIS on normal, VRAD on normal
Long : VRAD with -staticproppolys, -staticproplighting and -textureshadows
Extreme : Same as long, but with -final and -hdr.

A note about the map, it is a 16 sided sphere carved into a cube with another 16 sided sphere inside it. There are 6 camper van models, and 14 lights. All surfaces are lightmap scale 4.

People who have successfully completed this test on a non-fast setting:
Steff0o - Core i7 920 @2.6Ghz (8 cores), 01:31:43

People who have successfully completed this test on Fast:
StickZer0 - Pentium 4 2.8Ghz multithreaded, 05:02
Frozen - Phenom II X6 2.8Ghz processor, 01:33
Geit - Core i7 3.2Ghz, 00:50
Jimmy - Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz, 2:35

People who attempted and failed: (Fast not counted)
Smashman
StickZer0
Midget
WastedMeerkat
Grim Tuesday

Notable failures:
Smashman

People who fail:
Smashman

But wait! What if I can't compile this, or want a more reasonable benchmark upon which to test my processor?
Enter PL_Halfacre, courtesy of YM!
It can be found here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2126504/halfacre.7z

As before, if you compile this, please post your specs and stats!

Halfacre Compile times
YM - Intel quadcore i7-950 w/ multithreading @ 3.07 GHz, 24:24, Extreme
Smashman - i5 2.5Ghz, 04:04, Long
Smashman - i5 2.5Ghz, 08:30, Extreme

Halfacre Compile times (fast)
YM - Intel quadcore i7-950 w/ multithreading @ 3.07 GHz, 02:22

You know, what would actually be interesting is a map that isn't stupid but is complex.

Take halfacre for example, takes 7ish minutes for vvis on my previous PC, it would actually produce some useful/interesting results, this though is pointless, anyone who has a PC fast enough to compile it in a reasonable amount of time has better things to do, and everyone else wouldn't even be able to given a week.

Throw up the halfacre vmf then ;)

Maybe compiling 2Fort and posting the results would be more realistic to what people are going to be compiling? Everyone has access to it, and it seems suitably challenging. But if we did that, it wouldn't be such a ridiculous test!

Ok so Halfacre:

Intel quadcore i7-950 w/ multithreading @ 3.07 GHz
On fast:
VBSP - 16 seconds
VVIS - 1 second
VRAD - 2 minutes 5 seconds

On full: (includes -final and -hdr)
VBSP - 15 seconds
VVIS - 2 minutes 17 seconds
VRAD - 10 minutes 56 seconds x2

Here is the vmf and my lights_youme.rad which you will need for accurate comparisons (stick it in /tf/ and then add "-lights lights_youme.rad" to the light_exe section of your expert compile.)(as described in this thread http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=2994)
