Looks pretty sweet. Don't judge it by the trailer alone, you should look at the gameplay video. It's something that I've actually thought of before, just never into this much depth. The coolest thing I've seen so far is the constant battle for control of the towns, I imagine it could add some longevity to the game. The best thing about it is that it's free! Everyone make sure to register so you can be entered into the closed beta. They're not sure when it'll start, but I'll bet that the earlier you register, the better chance you have of getting in.

So WoW + Borderlands?

Except better and more well-thought out. WoW has too much wrong with it because they've made so many different abilities and enchantments and things, and there inevitably is always some exploit that allows arena matches to last for 30 minutes or something else ridiculous.

I had a lot of fun with Borderlands, but they went wrong by designing it exclusively for multiplayer and it was essentially an Xbox port, making the interface annoying to work with. I played it all the way through on single player and by the time I got to the end, I just ran through the entire last level to get to the last boss because those flying things were just too strong, and because I was able to. (Also there's this awesome glitch with Brick where you activate berserk just before you go down, and then you're always moving at berserk speed normally once you get back up, and then (berserk-speed * sprint speed) when you hold shift. I'm not sure how many people know about it, but there.) Anyway, the gameplay seemed too hollow because the characters' mouths weren't synced to the dialogue, and the story seemed too disjointed. Also, all of the guns were junk except one and when I found it, I just stuck with it for another fourth of the game until I found a better one. The art style was nice, though.

Taking another look at the FireFall website, I see that it's made by Red 5 Studios. Wasn't somebody applying there or getting an offer a while ago? It could've been Rexy, but I can't remember...

Hey, someone else has heard of Firefall! I've been following this for about a year, never been interested in MMOs before this but it looks quite nice and the story which they've elaborated on in the blog looks interesting. It being free helps too :D

Looks nice + free (but what type???) + cool gameplay (I don't know, something in there just reminded me of minecraft. No idea how though) + End of the year, so my HSC will be over (HOORAY FOR END OF SCHOOL + loads of free time before uni) = I'll put it on my "I'm Free, now Play" list

My clan has been keeping an eye on this one. Alot of us have signed up for the beta but there is no news when that is due to happen yet.

Red 5 are showcasing this at the upcoming PAX East (March 11-13th, Boston, MA) so I'd expect some more video after that happens.

The game looks really good, is meant to scale for older machines & is free to play! They intend to fund this by micro transactions :)ohmy:), but have stated that you will not be able to buy skills to beat all. Clan integration is also meant to be a big part.

If you haven't already then watch some of the videos, Vimeo HD link below.

Very interesting, it's like Borderlands and Tabula Rasa. I will definitely sign up for Beta, and we should make a TF2Maps "guild" in there if possible.

I was thinking "meh" then they got in the drop ship and flew over a huge area with masses of stuff on screen and my thoughts changed to "Whoa they must be using some pretty hardcore LoDs or have simple WoWesque graphics but the scale of this looks great". Then they mentioned 'free' and a million doubts and questions filled my head.

I don't really like the armour and equipment they showed being equipped reminds me a LOT of global agenda wich has a pretty poor artstyle in my eyes.

So this is interesting to me but the free scares me slightly, no, a lot.

Uh oh. I hope I don't miss half of the game if I don't buy anything from their shops, stuck with just the small arsenal of guns (most of which would suck, in this hypothetical situation) included in the free version. Mostly, though, I just hope there's nothing stupidly op in the shops. Of course there will be, otherwise there would be no reason to buy anything...

I agree, the scale is nice, it makes it feel open. But the art style seems a lot more like Borderlands to me because of the cartoony post-apocalyptic setting. I am also pretty concerned that it might be limited in gameplay if it's free, and I hope I'm proven otherwise.

Yeah GA was a veerrryy meh shooter, and then you had to wait about half an hour every time you wanted to play a 10 minute game.
Just plain useless :(

How does the art style look anything like borderlands? Have you guys not seen borderlands?

I think the similarity comes from the cell shading style, although Firefall doesn't look as apocolyptic in it's presentation.

Here's a link to an RPS interview with Matt DeWald the community manager at Red 5 Studios. They discuss quite a few things including the business model (Oct 2010).

Some gameplay video from PAX East. This is a PvP match between the DEVs & some community forum members. From what I understand, PvP takes place in an arena or map area and not in the persistant world. There's talk of it being used for competitive play.

DEVs v Fans Video

Medic gun remind you of anything?

Bit more video with a DEV discussing some of the features.
