ARENA Scarlet Devil Mansion

This was my first map ever. I've started it during summer 2009 and kept working on it to test new entities of game modes.
This final version is a DM map of a gigantic size with a lot of custom content, intended for long games with many players.


The Scarlet Devil Mansion is a location of the Touhou Project universe (a PC danmaku shmup). Here lives Remilia Scarlet, a 500 years old vampire, as well as her sister, her librarian, and all her maids.

How did I came to choose this location for a TF2 map?

Well, first I saw this comic on Nerfnow: http://nerfnow.com/comic/image/186

And then... I was wondering what happened to the RED Team in Gensokyo.

So each release of the map were new chapters added to the story. I will release the older maps later, they need to have their bugs corrected.


I put a lot of effort in this map. I hope you'll enjoy it!

TF2maps won't let me post the thread without a prefixe, so I choose arena, which is the closest to deathmatch.

Well, it looks, interesting....

The lighting seems odd, the textures... I'm usually okay with Vavle themed maps using valve textures, but since this isn't one, i'd stick with TF2 Textures...

Is that a floating shark?

Also, this looks a lot like a Trouble in Terrorist Town map reskinned... Not saying it is, but it looks like a TTT map.

Wtf?! at pic 6.

Lady Remilia.bsp is taking her tea on the balcony, watching the sunset.

A professional model maker offered me to pay 40$ for a Remilia model, I don't have the money, so I settled with my own brush art skills.

So I watched the video and I got 2 things to say, it's too big and you'll need some signs in that castle because people will get lost instantly.

That's why I gave up on making it an arena map and made it even bigger as a Deathmatch/Hide-and-seek/exploring map.

I guess I should have added signs back when I worked on the arena version.

It does look interesting. I'm dubious as to how it would play in Arena, and some of the texturing/detailing could be improved (I'm thinking of that screenshot of the library). But it certainly is intriguing.

There are many bugs in the console, but almost all of them are harmless, for example "this model has no physics" because I forgot to remove the solidity parameter of a non-solid model.

I guess that the next step in my learning is using "hints". I used some areaportals however.

As I said in the map description, it may lag during the first 10 seconds but then it's ok.

Also, how can I use hints in the area outside of the mansion? I won't work on this map anymore but this may help me for my future maps...
