I'm currently planning a new KOTH Map. I've sketched out a rough idea for the layout, including all the main buildings and the CP. I can't scan in the sketches but to give you a rough idea:
  • Spawns at either end of a large stretch of water (possibly a lake or similar)
  • CP suspended in the middle of water on stilts or similar
  • Some buildings also suspended above the water for each team (either side of CP)
  • Buildings connected by walkways

The main part of this map that differentiates it from other KOTH is the fact that water plays a huge role in the fighting, since all the walkways and buildings are made over it. I would ideally like to keep the water clear so that if two enemies fall in they can see each other (although there will be barriers preventing spies and the like from swimming straight to the enemy CP and spawn camping).

My question is which theme would you like to see used for this? I've posted some ideas in the poll, but if you have more I'd love to hear them.

Best thing to do is to make the map first, lay it out in hammer, and start having it tested, when its been tested a bit, then you cant start dealing with detailing.

And you may, as the test progress, change your mind, I know I did with my KoTH map, it started off as an industrial theme map, and is now an alpine map.

Thought, I still voted swamp :p

I vote for an under-construction quarry that has been filled with a swamp in a cove near a beach with cliffs on one side and rocks/sea on the other.

Do eeeet.

I've discounted alpine because we already have viaduct. Plus if it's snowy the lake would be ice. It doesn't make much sense otherwise.

It's true, but since most KOTH maps play quite similarly it makes sense to differentiate my map as much as possible.

Nah, changing theme because stock map uses it honestly bit silly, long as it is not a copy of it, theme shouldn't matter. (Otherwise Hoodoo wouldn't be Hoodoo, it probably would be some random alpine pl map :p )

Viaduct is Tundra.
Lumberyard is Alpine.

Too much water in a map doesn't suit gameplay very well. Nor do restrictive ramps/platforms.

Some of that is good to mix in, but not a whole map of it imo.

Water nerfs pyros. It also nerfs demos ability to shoot (underwater their bombs barely go anywhere).
It makes you move slower, makes players harder to see, etc...
And engies either need nobuild or they can hide a sentry in the water which is impossible to see.

platforms give jumping classes too much power. A soly or scout can bounce all over and other classes are stuck to very restricted paths.

There's basically an official koth map for every official theme, so the only way to be different is to create your own theme.

Sawmill isn't swamp, sawmill is sawmill.

And just because Valve already has a map of a certain theme, taht doesn't mean you shouldn't make it. If your making a map to get it official and nothing else, then you should stop for a second and reconsider what your doing.

Personally, with rundown, I'm making it so that other people like, and I'M happy with it. As long as the players and the creator are happy, thats a fun map.

So don't count out a theme because its already been made, the themes are loose and you can have a ton of fun with them (like with rundown, its a Thundermountain/sawmill theme)
