2fort seems to be the most popular map (making ctf the most popular game mode), at least according to public metrics, and this was the case back when I played TFC.
I have some suspicions for why 2fort is and was so popular (not because it's a particularly elegant or well-made map), compared to other CTF maps like doublecross and turbine, but I'd be interested to hear other people's suspicions in this regard.

I think its popular because its broken and gimmicky, I havn't really looked at 2forts faults, but from what I come up with off the top of my head, its really linear, and has horrid sightlines down the central area, which is really the only way to the other side. When I played on it there would be sniper after sniper there, upwards of 5 snipers, and the game would go no where. Just get that many snipers and a couple engies covering the courtyard and the intel, and the game doesn't go anywhere. The more of each there are, the less useful a single uber is... and half the time is almost impossible to get an uber and then get in that far. (to the courtyard and thus the intel)

EDIT: this might be a better thing to discuss in the "team fortress Talk" section.

One of the main issues with 2fort is simply that the flag is behind spawns. you have to walk back and forth in front of the spawnroom in order to even capture a flag, which is why it stalemates so often. It's popular because it's the most well known dm map, and it doesn't intimidate new players. Other than that I have no clue.

new players seem to think sniping is the coolest activity - 2fort has a massive sniper sightline and dedicated 'sniper decks'

in this map , a full team of the same class over dominate the other team.

This is true for any map on certain classes. a team full of spies on any map won't win (including on 2fort), and a team full of engineers has a pretty good chance on almost any map.

People also like it because you are ALWAYS engaged. Out of spawn, fight. Most 2fort servers are insta-spawn so:

out of spawn, fight, die, out of spawn, fight, die, out of spawn... never ending action. Nobody that plays it a lot cares if the flag is ever touched or not.

This is certainly why I play 2fort, preferably on instantspawn servers, as solly with medical rockets: I know for certain that in a mere 2 rocketjumps I can be pounding the snot out of snipers, and the only reason I pay any attention to the flag is if mine is out and I can spam it for spies. Somehow turbine and doublecross don't enable this rhythm nearly as well as 2fort, which is too bad, at least in the case of doublecross, which is a fine map.

It's the most well known map so they play it and it just grows on them I guess.

I think it's because of all the weird stuff that takes place there and gets posted on YouTube (e.g. Painis Cupcake living in the RED spawn, Vagineer doing various strange things in the basement, HWM models wreaking havoc, etc.). Everyone's just hoping they'll witness some piece of that action for themselves as it's happening. ;)

Seriously though...
I think it's because it's the "Mascot Map" of TF2. It was the primary setting for the original trailers, and it's a very simple map overall. Plus the detailing is some of the best TF2 has to offer (IMHO anyway). Even though the gameplay is undeniably wonky, there are other things about it that are good and/or meaningful for people.

I have to agree with PL's second point...

I played it because I saw it in the original trailers, and it was there where I learned I liked the sniper alot. It provided a challenge... (Conversly, I found I loved Medic on Pipeline, just fun fact)...

I also really do think that 2fort has a lot of nice detailing, when compared to granary or some of the other stock valve maps.

1. Simple layout
2. Sniper / Engineer-friendly (nice friendly respawn zones near the front-lines)
3. Hard to lose, easy to stalemate
