I found some great HL2 ambient sounds I want to put in my map, and I also currently use a couple of HL2 textures. If the client only has TF2 will they have to download these extra materials? or show up as purple checkers in game? or do they already have these things installed with TF2??

Thanks in advance!

They are stored in the Source SDK which comes with every source game.

BTW: Using HL2-Textures in your map isn't good. You will get negative responses I guess. At least if they're clearly visible. Valve used a HL2 texture in granary at a building at cp3. But you almost can't see it without noclip.

Awesome! These sounds are going to kick ass then

and Yeah I know about the whole HL2 texture thing, I've gotten bashed for using them in my first map. 99% of my current map uses TF textures, but I'm sure you would agree with me that I absolutely need some hl2 textures for what I've created ::p:

Those that use HL2 textures wherein it is excess, nay, even in moderation, shall be confined to the lowest circle of mapper hell. Thou shalt refrain from using HL2 textures or risk damnation.

Seriously, it makes your level just look bad if you're mixing them into it in even the slightest consciously noticeable way.

If it shows up in hammer by default its ok to use it -- its part of the source shared materials gcf, along with generic textures like tools/skybox and tools/trigger. I think there is a small place your HL2 textures under the right conditions. As long as you're not making a building that looks like its been transplanted from ravenholm or city17 it should be ok.

Heck, in my map cp_dryer one of the main textures is a HL2 texture, but its just stretched and used in such a away that it fits the TF2 theme.
