Will Barack Obama be assassinated?

Was discussing various politic stuff over dinner, and my dad seems convinced it will happen. Despite being a staunch republican, he said he'll have to vote of the Dems depending on who the VP is. McCain is rather old, so whoever his VP turns out to be is also rather important. And given how disasterously unpopular Bush is, it seems unlikely that the Republicans can win anyways. So my question to you; do think that someone will off Obama when he gets elected president?

I say 'when', b/c the aforementioned factor gives him a huge edge. I would like to think that such thing isn't possible in the modern day U.S. On the other hand, the Bush administration has more thoroughly violated the Constitution than any president in history, to the point of drawing comparisons to a monarchy. So such radical action may not be as far away as one is led to believe. Anyways, enough of my rambling. What do you all think of the issue?

My mom is actually very frightened about this.
Her generation witnessed several assassinations and I think it's a legitimate fear for them.

I don't thing he'll end up being assassinated, personally. Or at least I hope not. The secret service is fucking good nowadays. There could be an attempt... but I doubt it would do anything but empower his supporters if he survived. That's why it's a politically stupid move. If you assassinate your opposing party's lead, then they are more likely to get elected.

Considering this forum is now being watched by the NSA....

Regardless of my political affiliation, I would assume there would at least be a plot against him, though that is far different from any action being taken. Not terribly long ago Gerald Ford was shot at (twice, if I recall correctly). Times have changed, but how much? There were news reports quite a while back about how serious the SS was being with his security, so they are obviously worried.

Though, there is one other point I would like to touch on. You did mention how McCain's VP will have a huge impact on his campaign, not only because his age but the way he is viewed within the GOP as well. The same could be true for Obama however. Imagine if he was killed, or at least a large portion of the population believed that as a possibility. Who would take over? What if Clinton was his running mate?

Finally, and this is just because I have no idea what would happen in this case, what happens if prior to the election (say 2-3 days before or something) one of the candidates die (could be either, doesn't matter). Does the VP then run as Pres? Or does that party fail to field a candidate?

I have serious doubts that Obama can win the election. McMain may be considered old and decrepit by the younger crowd, but the younger crowd is the crowd who typically doesn't vote.

Well obama definatly seems the best candidate from my perspective (English, who favours the conservative party)
I think his assasination might well happen, which is sad. Its so sad that anyone would assasinate anyone, for any reason.

Wow, pretty bold topic.

The question of whether or not he will be is wild speculation at best. It's not even a fifty/fifty chance so not even a coin toss.

Let's see, out of all the President's there were only 2 successful assasinations. Lincoln and JFK.

Many attempts/plots have been made. I'd probably say that someone has had a plot agaisnt every leader in History. Very few actually boil down to an attempt and even fewer are even close to successful.
Basically anytime someone is elected who has different views than some extreme nutjob there will be a plot.

So my opinion of the question posted is most likely not. It's possible some nutjob will have a plot but the likely hood of it ever boiling down to even an attempt is slim to none. The chances are probably 1 in a million at best, but I'm not a mathmetician.

It's sad actually, I'm sure the reason (which wasn't stated) that your dad believes it will happen is probably 99% race related in the first place. Does your dad also believe that if Hillary would have been elected the same attempt would be made because of her sex.
The reason I bring this up is because the powers that have always been have always had more of a bias towards gender than race. I don't believe it's right, but I do believe they'd rather have a black man in office than a woman.
Like I said, that's not right but I believe that's how it is sadly.

Sgt Frag, look up William McKinley, 25th Pres. Hes the reason Teddy Roosevelt became president.

I would say that the reason his father believes this to be the case is because of Obama's race, but that doesn't mean his father is a racist. Rather he is point out the violent history some groups have towards others of different races (i.e. the KKK). I think the chance of violence against a female president is much lower, or at least the perception of that chance is, because there aren't groups who have historically done the same things to women that have been done to other races (in the US at least).
