ITT: We bitch about promo items.

I've wondered for a long time whether I'm the only person in the world who doesn't currently play TF2 solely to whine about content. If what content gets added is truly all you care about (complaints about new items are quickly becoming the bulk of TF2 discussion that goes on here. Seriously.), I suggest asking yourself why you're continuing to waste your time with something you don't enjoy, and go find something you do, so you can stop making yourself unnecessarily angry.

It seems like every one of your posts focuses on how perfect TF2 is and will always be.

I have nothing against that, but this thread is used for bitching, so please bitch about TF2.

I have went and found something I enjoy doing. I haven't played TF2 in about two months but I still hang around here to help people so I'll be angry about it all I want.

Unless you think I should just leave entirely since I don't map for or play TF2...

It's not like we're bitching about it because we hate TF2. We're bitching about it because we're an avid and concerned fan-base and we hate seeing things we love go the wrong ways (at least I fall under that category, I don't know about boojum, or the rest of the people above. That's just how I see it).

It is because TF2 is prostituting itself by giving out items and hats with no physical value to people for buying the other game assuming people would pay a ton of money just for sed items.
OMG the items looks so badass I think I'll pay $50 so I can get it a month before anyone can craft it!

Keeping that in mind, it's still a really smart marketing move. And that's why they make the big bucks.

I really don't mind these things, my only problem is that it came bit too quick after MNC promo, but even then, i don't care all that much, game is fun and that is all that matters for me

TF2 is still fun if you ignore all the ... crap. And play on Vanilla servers.

Honestly, I find it hard to describe what exactly I find "wrong" with TF2 nowadays, but I'll do my best to make it somewhat comprehensible.

The vibe I used to get from TF2 and the community that surrounds it no longer exists. Gone are the days when everything was focused on the game itself. The class updates treated us with only a few weapons, but they were typically well thought out, and included comics, Valve maps, community maps, maybe a new game mode, and the seemingly extinct Meet The videos. As a nerdy little TF2 player, it was something to get excited about. When the update finally came out people would go farm achievements and have a hell of a time doing it. When I got my new toys I'd go play a lot more TF2 and have a lot of fun. The updates were TF2-related, and would just add more reasons for me to recommend the game to other people.

Now it's all about obtaining hats and other items, the Mannco store, promo stuff, etc. The "winter update" seemed kind of silly, from my perspective it was mainly a way to get people to buy keys for festive crates. The weapons were just variations of what we already had, only with new weapon models. Not really worth playing hours upon hours to painstakingly obtain (or paying money to get them instantly). And of course all the promo stuff, which has already been discussed. How are they going to write that BS into the canon?

I realize I don't have to buy items, or get promotions, or use the poorly designed weapons. I don't want to. But the fact that these things are soiling what is (the underlying gameplay is still great, obv.) a great game is what bugs me. I equate it with putting advertising billboards in the Half-Life series.

Exactly. Not just for the company though, but for those dedicated to the community as well. By far the best thing I've seen Valve work into TF has been the Mann Co Store... for exactly the same reason that I love Steam. Valve's taken TF's success to help promote a lot of smaller game companies and dedicated contributers in it's fan base.

It's because of this that I really don't mind the increased rollout of material, and it's why I'll always pick up stamps and community made items in the store rather then crafting or trading.

I'd like the mannco store if they finally decided to put my hat in it ;(
I don't see why they don't. It's not like there is any disadvantage to it... They do get 75% of the profits, so leaving it out of the store is economically a bad idea since you are stopping the potential buyers from buying (even if my hat is a fugly ass hat).

Adding any lower quality items (and you just called it "fugly ass") will decrease the general opinion of the whole system, will add an extra download, will possibly create an eyesore which is forced onto people (moreso than currently) and will cause more general nerdrage and angry letters for them to sift through.
In theory, at least. I haven't seen your hat (as far as I know) but calling it "fugly ass" doesn't put your situation in a very good light. I sincerely hope I just suck at detecting sarcasm and/or you were only semi-serious.

But it's already in the game. If valve is worried about those things maybe they shouldn't have picked it in the first place, like so many other items.

Thank you! I was having problems putting it into words too. The promo items are literally product placement, and the funniest/saddest thing is that players are paying for it. Bobby Kotick wishes he could pull off such a crass marketing scheme and get away with it.

It was sarcastic. I was just cracking a joke at all the haters.

Not sure whether or not to like this...

Why would anybody care about promotional items?
They're usually ugly and tradeable.

Though the game starts to look like a trash bin with all this crap flying around the servers.

It wasn't a statement about your hat, I honestly haven't played enough to seen it enough to have an opinion beyond "I hate all hats". It's just to mean that why did valve pick something they would have doubts about putting in the store. (if that happens to be why it isn't there yet)

Spend $50, get a gameplay-changing weapon no one else can get for a few weeks. sounds alright to me.

not to mention they attached the good ol' genuine status to make sure you had to pay many hats to get it.
