Hey Nerd, what happened to Far Cry?
In case you've drowned in a sea of rocks, or your brain has turned to the consistency of one because of all that Call of Duty you've been playing, Die Hard was a movie in 1988 about Bruce Willis, known as John McClane, running around a skyscraper shooting up Germans. Okay they were terrorists. They take hostages and John, as a one man army, saves everyone, disarms a bomb, and stops their plan to rob the place. Basically every single action movie after 1988 in a skyscraper.

Jump forward to 1992 - a sequel has come and raked in millions in box office revenue and the Super Nintendo has hit store shelves. So why on earth does Activision think now would be a good time to develop a game based on the original Die Hard for the regular NES? Fucked if I know but my family was poor so we bought it.

No seriously, where's Far Cry 2?
My first memories of Die Hard consist of me being four and watching my brother anguish over it constantly. After about a year he gave up and passed the controller onto me, and the anguish spread. I spent two years playing this game and never beat it. It wasn't until I was eight and I played it again for another month or so that I managed to finally beat it. Well now it's time for you guys to share the pain.

Die Hard is really fucking hard. You can say it's a die hard of difficulty. It's really tough. You have about a half hour to defeat as many of the 40 terrorists in the building you can. Armed with your pistol, feet, and whatever the hell you can find, good luck. After all the locks on the vault are broken, you must fight the final boss and every terrorist you haven't killed on a limited time span. It's really brutal and it's really awesome.

The game has two difficulties - Beginner and Advanced. Beginner features five floors, 31-35, and the boss floor, 30. All the items are in the same spot between each game, John always starts on floor 32, and all the enemies start in the same place. Advanced mode starts John off on a random floor, bullets deal twice as much damage, and I've seen some items change places between games.

So... no Josip?
That's right! You're playing too! I'm going to be contributing about an update per week of me trying (and most likely failing.) Of course, nothing lasts forever, so I'm going to keep playing until I beat both Beginner and Advanced modes, or until I give up. But I'm not going to play this game alone. It's no fun to watch someone who knows everything about a game lose terribly, so you're coming along!

If you want to play along too, grab a copy of Nestopia or your favorite NES emulator, or an actual NES if you have one, and a copy of Die Hard. I'll put up a guide on how to get it working if you're clueless. The best part? If you think you're man enough you too can put up updates here. Just get some capture software and record yourself playing, then do some fancy editing, and throw it up here! I'll pop it into the OP just for you. (This handy dandy workflow diagram can help too.) Commentary isn't essential, but is always fun.

Not convinced to do my work for me? How's this sound: the first member to capture themselves beating Beginner mode and the first member to capture themselves beating Advanced mode will each receive a Steam game that costs $10 or under. Win 'em both and get a $20 game for nothing! Again, commentary is not essential, but video is. And a brief word of advice: I checked GameFAQs doing some research for the LP. I'd avoid their advice. Contest void when I say so.

Oh by the way I'm awful at following through with things. Expect the first video in the next week or so. Good luck, McClane. You're gonna need it.

I only own three NES games that I have not beaten yet.
Those games are Top Gun, Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles, and Battletoads.
I will be perfectly satisfied if beat even one of them in my lifetime.

These three games taunted me during my childhood and still do.

So I have my process for editing/uploading videos set up. I should have an update soon.
