Hi, I'm a new user and I'd like to know what things to consider when naming a map.

Right now I am nearly through the alpha stages of a map and I have yet to come up with a name that is better for it than ctf_express. There is a map names "Express A1" on the forums which seems to be arena, and i'm going to have a look what it is.

Also, a cp and koth version came up in google which seem to be rather obscure maps and I don't think either have been seriously released.

What do?

If a map of the same name has been released in any version, it's best to come up with a new name.

try to choose something that doesnt have any mode attached to it. you seperate your naming by development stages, or its at least how i used to do it. cp_mapname_a1, a2, a3, etc for alpha.
cp_mapname_b1, b2, etc for beta

You should usually search on http://tf2stats.net/maps/ for a map of your same name, make sure to fill in the prefix, though, and all matching results will pop up without you having to hit search.

Basically you name your map as follows:

since you seem to understand how alphas and etc work, just keep in mind that you'll want to release several alphas to make sure your map has a good, refined layout. Then you move into betas, which is detailing, and finishing up your stuff. Then you'll release an RC (release client). if there already exists a cp_express in any form, it's generally a bad idea to release your map using the same name.

I usually just search on tf2stats, and then if there's any form of that name taken, I'll just choose a new one.

Thanks all, TF2Stats seems like the source I was dying to find.

P.S.
Also, I indeed knew how the Alpha-Beta-RC system works I did misword it though, I meant to say I'm nearly through making the first alpha rather than finishing the stage, my bad!

when finding a name for a map a thesaurus is your best friend.

Here's the listings for express, you can usually find a good one from the list or by clicking on one of the linked words on the list that better fits your map.
