So you've found a rubbish map on FPSB that's got straight 10 ratings, you're pretty pissed off with its unfair praise. But what can you do?

Post a link to it here, so we can all go rate it fairly*

It need not be a map, it need not be some one else’s, post anything on FPSB that needs fair ratings and then hopefully anyone who passes though here will do so if they have a spare moment.**
Remember that if you have to give it a negative rating make sure you justify your points well and you hit the anonymous button to avoid being attacked in revenge.

* Fair
adj
a. Having or exhibiting a disposition that is free of favouritism or bias; impartial: a fair mediator.
b. Just to all parties; equitable: a compromise that is fair to both factions.

If the 'fairly*' clause was not there, i would of locked this thread, thrown you in to a pit and asked you to put some lotion on your skin.

But it seems admirable if maps will be judged fairly. Goodluck.

Well the whole point of this is that we're trying to bring order and sensibility back to FPSB, it started with Vilepickle getting the 'anonymous' button implimented, now all we have to do it spread out through the FPSB comunity and use it to rate things properly for a change.

Hopefully it's done fairly. This would mean that when we find a crappy map with a score of 10, we don't give it a 2 to offset all the high scores... we give it the 5 or 6 it deserves, in all fairness.

Still, I ignore the scores on FPSBanana now. My downloads are dictated by how good the screenshots look. I know I'll miss some good maps now and then, but typically when somebody has the skills to make a great-looking map, they have the common sense to make it play well, too.

Thats exactly what needs to be done.

the reason you ignore the ratings, is because no body does this, if we can all start doing this and get others too as well then we can stop ignoring ratings and actually use them to rate how good a map is.

/me Wonders what Youme's opinion of a "fair" rating for a innovative surf map, or a orange map that plays extremely well...

Let's say you like ska. There's a ska band that has some really peppy tunes, does some really innovative things with their brass, and for their field of music, is really impressive both technically and creatively. Oh, but they only play at funerals that they haven't been invited to.

How do you rate the band?

or a orange map that plays extremely well...

Let's say there's another group that plays some style of music you dig. You go to their concert and all of their songs start out incredibly, with compelling lyrics and a tune that really gets stuck in your head. The only thing is, every single song they start playing they stop after about a minute and say "Sorry, we haven't finished writing that one yet, and really, we probably never will."

How do you rate that band?

Some fag just gave me a 5 for shock and 3.5 for biosphere....
I wish only the critic rating matters

3.5 is correct if orange maps get 0.5 scores :)

but it's the authors that choose the assessment criteria they want, so if a surfmap or orangemap wants to be judged purely on detail, design, and looks, then let the bashing begin

whoa hold on there, we're not going to be bashing anything, thats not the point. If the map's ratings are on gameplay design and looks and its a surf map, it's likely going to score very low on looks but higher on design and gameplay. I think we should make a point of actually playing every map that we rate so that we actually can give it an accurate rating. if you get into this surf map ingame (on a proper server not a local one) and you get spawn camped every time the it doesn't deserve high for gameplay. If however you can make it down the track and see that a fair amount of effort has gone into designing the track give it a reasonable score for design - of course it can't really score more than say a 6 if it has huge repeating textures, is just wedges floating in space and doesn't really look nice.

The point is to give accurate ratings on the cirteria they want. If they have neglected a part of that criteria by leaving large areas of repeating textures and not sealing the map in so it isnt just floating in a sky box then we can't score them highly on it. If however you have an absolute blast surfing down the track, free of spawn campers and other asshats exploiting the map then you can, and should give it higher on gameplay.

What's funny is that on one of the maps, a commenter writes "I can't wait to try it out" right after rating the map a 10. He can tell just from just two crappy orange screenshots that the map is perfect.

I HATE orange maps. Period. I can't even focus on the gameplay because it just reaks of laziness to me.

So I think it would be fair for me to not even download one and rate it.

Those that like surf and orange maps should rate them. Those that dislike them shouldn't even bother reviewing them. Anybody indifferent and just downloading those maps can make the decision themselves whether they like them.

I myself would focus on dustbowl style maps and rate them because I think those are notably absent on custom map servers. And I want to give the proper ones the rating they deserve.

I find the other problem with FPSB is the people that rate a map based ONLY on the 3 ~ 5 screenshots of it. IMNSHO, if you haven't downloaded and at least noclipped though the map, you have no business rating it. Feedback, maybe, but no rating. I can understand for the many maps that you can literally see the entire level within 2 or 3 screenshots* (cp_box, p*nisisland, etc).

There are quite a few maps out there that look outstanding in screenshots but don't even load, play like s***, or the areas in the pictures are the only descent looking portion of map full of repeating, stretched, and misaligned textures with little or no detail.

On the other end of the scale, there's map makers out there that put together some incredible maps, but are completely unskilled at taking pictures and give a bad impression of an otherwise great map. Or, as has already been stated, the map may look awful, but have some outstanding gameplay qualities.

I know I'm the extreme minority here, but I don't mind orange maps. Do the doors/elevators/respawn/etc work? Is it class-balanced? If yes and yes, I'm happy.

Though the only exception to this would be that GOD-awful rainbow map. I don't see how anybody could possibly tolerate that- and this is coming from a guy who religiously plays MARIO_KART.
