But does it still have the SecureROM? I read somewhere that it was dropped for both ME and Spore. But I just read the GameSpy review which said the security check is still in there. Piracy sucks and everything, but my laptop doesn't always have internet access. Also, the 3-install limit is stupid beyond words. Most sad, but unless something changes soon, I'll have to torrent this like I did BioShock. What are your thoughts on the matter?

... oh wait, you didnt want modoration advice :p

Install limits really do suck, dads just had a hard disk faliure and hes probably lost several very expencive software licences because they don't allow you install it on a new hard drive. I say, if they impose stupid limits, f**k em, get their software anyway you can that doesnt involve giving them money, they don't deserve it.

The game company still deserves it, but if there's no way to avoid also paying the security software company, I'd be more inclined to get the game through other channels and mail the game company a nice donation.

it isn't unnecessarily illegal.

Most people have a problem with having to authenticate their game evry week because limited or no internet available and buy games to play them offline.

Being you need a internet just to play an offline game is F'ing stupid.

Well with all this crap going on "To play offline !!! games i have to register online is retarded" what they just ended up with is that everybody with no internet went and bought a pirate version of the game which requires no internet whatsoever ! i have seen 5 of my friends do that with portal they dont have internet and they wont have it (bunch of loosers XD) so they went and bought for $8 a pirate version passed it and thew it out the window :)

technically, if you pay for it, and the installs are up, then u can "legally" download it and install it, because you did actually pay for it, so no one's losing money :D

I was going to buy Bioshock, but when it came out it only allowed three installs and there was no way to get more installations.

I am a bit of a freak computer user, I frequently am reformatting my computer to try out different software configurations. I currently have a Dual Boot Ubuntu / Windows setup going on. However sometimes I feel more in the mood for an Ubuntu / Vista, or what-have-you. As I get the desire to play a game, I re-install it, play it for a few days, then forget about it.

With Bioshock, I would need to ask the fucking company to play the game I bought. Whereas if I pirate the game, I can play the game on my own terms and not have to deal with the bullshit activation.

When it is easier to pirate a game than it is to BUY the game, then you have problems.

Who seriously thought that this kind of security would be a good idea and prevent piracy? If anything it encourages it.

Mass Effect is another game I had been looking forward too, but the first reports were that it needed to phone home every so often to check to see if it was legit. When people rightfully complained they toned it down a bit to Bioshock levels + a little extra.

You know how when you install a copy of windows to many times (due to reformats) you need to call them up to get it activated? When according to a FAQ I read you are going to need to do that with Mass Effect if you go past the number of installs, or if you reformat your computer without running their "Deactivation" utility.

So basically, their security measures which are supposed to increase their customers are just pissing off their customers. Seriously, is it any wonder their profits are plunging?

While yes, some security on disks is a good thing, putting draconian protections in place is not the answer.
