So is this a "comp" server or a "pub" server?

I think a good team balancing plugin (and people will disagree on what constitutes "good" sometimes) is going to overshadow everything else when it comes to changes that can affect the "worth" of playtesting.

In my mind, the only single "open question" is random crits, and only then because they tend to help/harm certain specialized classes differently. (ex. Heal-centric medic, stabbing spy, headshotting sniper.)

Everything else is either "Must Be Normal" or "Do Not Care":

These things need to match how the map will be "in the wild":
  • Intelligence crit time
  • Respawn rates
  • (In)ability to talk while dead.

I don't care about these, either way, because they're so minor:
  • Damage spread
  • Pellet spread

Yes because random crits create memorable moments, anyway i kinda give up you can't argue with people that don't even bother to read and understand your point of view.

Just so you know; it's not personal preference, it's pure math.

Without, its always fixed, so you know how much damage you have done. Of course the damage reduces the farther away you are.

Did you forget the other feature Valve added that lets you know how much damage you did with a nice red popup every time you hit them?

It's more like knowing how much damage you have to do. For example, for a soldier, you can kill him with a headshot and a bodyshot straight after. But with random damage, that might not be the case.

4:08 PM - tpg: about the hole config thing could we control all that from Feedback?
4:08 PM - tpg: I mean I could add traction pre-test and then set it to crit/spread on
[GM] Geit is now Away.
[GM] Geit is now Online.
4:34 PM - tpg: also this: 4:11 PM - Nineaxis: but having inconsistent server configs might be worse than havng just one or the other
4:11 PM - Nineaxis: :\
4:11 PM - Nineaxis: and a default setting still would need to be chosen
4:35 PM - [GM] Geit: Yes, that's what I'm getting at
4:35 PM - [GM] Geit: Default would be vanilla i'd imagine
4:35 PM - tpg: yeah just to make ia simpler
4:35 PM - tpg: it*
4:36 PM - tpg: what about what none said?
4:36 PM - tpg: nine*
4:36 PM - [GM] Geit: I don't think it matters
4:36 PM - [GM] Geit: it's pretty typical for settings to change from map to map

I swear...this site has just been going downhill since the comp ctf thing...every time I pop in some other stupid comp ideal leaks in and starts causing problems. Oh well, this just adds another reason for me to avoid the servers.

Anyways...mainly posting to mention the thing that no one ever seems to care about, no crits limits gameplay options. Turning them off does not compensate for melee weapons and other weapons that have no crits as an "disadvantage".
Melee weapons have an interesting dynamic, a 10% higher chance to crit then just about everything else, that is completely lost when crits are turned off.
I just like the extra decision of, "hmm, pyro approaching, do I run or gamble on the crit kukri", and whenever i can't do that its always kinda disappointing.
Not to mention that the "no random crits" disadvantage now becomes meaningless, thus making those weapons all the more effective.

Actually, that's pretty true. Melee crit chance is a base 40% and there have been several times i've switched to melee after killing several people, knowing i've boosted that to ~80-90%. I've capped the intel on 2fort several times thanks to higher melee crit chance through high damage dealing at the spiral corridor, saving my arse from axestinguisher pyros by critting them first. The fact that i feel the pyro should have, and deserved to kill me, is just the comp in me. But i stand by random un-earned crits making significant alterations to combat being annoying.

See cirts do play a very important role in TF2 pub play. Also since Geit made the "oh we can't change the configs bla bla bla" argument moot I don't see why we can't just pick some settings and leave the configs to Geit.

Crits fail in their purpose. Balancing melee weapons with crits is an awful idea. No spread is only an improvements. Intel crits only make actual good ctf maps worse and the rest of them more annoying.

30 want Crits
27 don't

34 want spread
23 don't

29 want Intel Crits
28 don't

Well server admins?

(Also remember Geit can make that auto map config thing so don't use that configs an excuse.)

Thats pretty split in most cases. Hell, even the Intel Crits is in a decent margin of error for the poll. (And probably crits too)

(Also why do 34 people want spread, thats not pellet spread from shotguns. Thats "Does my rocket do 90 damage or 115 damage?")

With a split like that, it's easier to keep them off. Having crits on annoys some people, but having them off annoys no people (and they usually don't even notice). Better to annoy no people.

I also think that intel crits are not good; winning team will roll losing team even more if they get extra crits.

It encourages offensive behavior over turtling.

When I play on servers with intel crits, I see less engineers. I like that.

Honestly if a mapper really wants crits or whatever on his map it's not hard to quickly change using rcon.

Doesn't work like that TPG

You can't force change from a poll that results in a 50/50 split opinion.
I know that. :|

I was just making a point that not everyone is gung ho with the current settings and that the server admins should talk to Geit about using the config pulg-in thing he is talking about vs. ironing this poll just because you disagree with it.
