I know this is obviously a mapping forum, but I didn't see anywhere to post this.

Basically, I've done a quick model (just learning!) in Maya, and did UVMapping for the whole thing, but as of now, it's still a bunch of seperate objects (inside Maya).

I guess what I don't know is where to go from here. I'm guessing (from this thread, I'm supposed to somehow combine all of the objects I've used to construct my model into one object, and then change the pivot to the ground, so it sits neatly atop ground when placed in a map.

Anyway, I guess I'm sort of at a loss, I'm using Maya 2011 (student license), regarding the 3D package I'm using.

And here's a screenshot of the model, rendered in Maya with UV mapping applied (I haven't done specular yet, still trying to figure out how that works.)

Track64_RenderNoSpec.jpg

This is just what it looks like, a 64-unit section of track, which I made becuase Valve's track sections seem to "lie" about how long they are. 64 unit sections are actually more like 61-62, etc, so they don't snap together as I'd like in Hammer using a 32-unit grid. Also, I'm doing this for a learning experience, as I want to learn Maya, (modelling/uv mapping), and the Maya->Hammer workflow, for future projects.

Anyway, I appreciate any help ahead of time.

o_O I've never had a problem with the train tracks....

Anyways, Ive exported/imported a few models in maya(its an older version than yours but much should still work)

First thing is to Make a collision model. This will be used for any impacts onto the object. Make one or more polygons. Make them all convex and as simple as you can make them. Use combine (under polygons tab) to make them into a single polygon. Next you need to soften all the edges on the collision model hold down Shift hover over your model and hold down right click, then: soften/harden edge > soften edge.

Combine your actual model as well.

Next using the center Axis of the world move your model and its collision model to where you want it to be then freeze transformations on all models(Ctrl+F)

Delete the history of all your models now (Edit>Delete by type>History) this will cut down on things to go wrong.

After that export using the valve export plugin (install how-to can be found here:http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Maya)

His tutorial should take it from there...

Finally I have a tutorial for importing hats into source. It covers many of the same things you need to do for static props. Just ignore the stuff about adding a bone in it and centering pivot point.

Okay, so when i get home from work, I'm gonna work on this. How do I go about combining all of the seperate objects that comprise this model into one object? I didn't see a way to do it at first glance in Maya.

Thanks in advance!

look under the polygons tab on the shelf its called combine (looks like a bunch of objects with a circle around it.) just select all your objects you want combined and click it. They should all turn green(meaning one object selected).
