What are your opinions on the US midterm elections?

Me, I wish that everyone would stop blaming each other, and get things done. Also, hypocrites make me break out in a rash. I hate people who complain that the government isnt helping them enough, then says that they will cut taxes.

Keep it civil guys.

What's wrong with Hippocrates? It's the hypocrites that bug me the most. ;)

All we had here were attack ads - not one candidate for any position even tried to self-promote. So all I learned was that they're all really good at name-calling, but probably don't have a clue about whatever position it is they're running for, based on their dodging of the question on what it is THEY would do, rather than what they claim the OTHER person did (note: literally every claim they made could be proven false with 5 minutes on Google).
Loved the story about the idiot who literally didn't know what the first amendment was though. :)

Don't wanna say anymore, politics and I mix like gasoline and the Pyro.

This. Every time a campaign ad would come on television I would be sitting there waiting to hear what they were about. Needless to say, it never happened.

What bugs me the most is when people vote for the party, not the beliefs of the candidate or what they're proposing. Some people need to open their eyes and look beyond Republican/Democrat.

Are you freakin' kidding me? I'm not going to give Valve $2.50 plus tax for any sort of artiodactyla.

______________

My main feeling of betrayal is towards a politician who isn't even up for re-election: Obama. Forget all the things which could've been stalled by Republican filibustering in the Senate, when''s all that whole secrecy/due-process/executive-power stuff from the Bush era that he could unilaterally alter getting fixed up? Eh? >:|

By the same token, voting either way in terms of congresscritters doesn't really affect that issue I care a lot about, so... meh.

First, Leminnes, your "response" annoys me. I brought up a very specific complaint, and all you can do is link to a big Obama-cheering site of randomly-presented blurbs. I thought we were going to "talk politics" instead of "give link to random talking-point generator". >95% of those randomly-presented one-liners are completely irrelevant to my complaint.

Second, that site isn't really stuff Obama as a specific politician has accomplished: When "Obama signs law X" that often says a lot more in favor of the Democratic legislators who got Bill X through the legislature than Obama having the easy choice of not-vetoing it. (As opposed to my complaints, which are almost entirely in Obama's area of influence.)

............ But hey, let's take a look, maybe it's not that bad.

The first blurb I could find ("Issued executive order to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay") links to this January 2009 article, Obama signs order to close Guantanamo Bay facility. Schedule: "within a year"... So, about 1.75 years later, let's see how that turned out... Oh, wait, it's still open.

So the talking-point is technically true, because he did sign an executive order, but why the heck is that being given the Mission Accomplished treatment, eh?

Not to mention that even if Guantanamo were closed, it wouldn't mean anything if all the same crappy practices simply moved to, say, Bagram AFB. (Hint, hint.) I can only hope the rest of the site isn't just as cherry-picked and misleading.

Every election that goes by I actually do the research, check the candidates and find out where they stand. And every time I do that I discover that almost without exception all the candidates I prefer belong to the same party.

Also, attack ads or no, political advertisements on TV are generally worthless. No, no matter how hard you try you CAN'T tell me what I want to know about your candidacy in 30 seconds.

What I would like to say is this:

There are 2 things in the world that no one can agree on,

POLITICS and RELIGION

so it usually ends in a dead end argument with both sides left angry at each other. A suggestion would be Don't start political threads unless your asking for trouble.

American politics makes me *facepalm*. ultimately, Obama is doing a great job, i think, but thanks to the shitty situation he was left with, his support is heammoraghing away, and i dont know how to spell that. In reading the guardian yesterday, there was an article that said, basically, "Its a lot better than it would have been, but "We avoided this" doesnt win votes"

However, ultimately, in 2012, you'll have a choice. Obama, or (probably) Palin. However much you dislike obama, grit your teeth and pick the lesser of two evils

Uk i know a lot more about, what with living there and being politically active and all. I canvass and so on for the local labour party, and believe David Cameron is a turd in a suit.

I'd feel better about every election if it weren't for the fact that we're trapped in a system engineered by the two major parties to keep everyone else out, so they can be free to get as corrupt as they want without consequence (because even when they piss off the public enough to lose their power, they know the opposition party is bound to do the same within a term or two, and it'll be back to Square One).

But the Tea Party in particular annoys me. You know that old saying about how you're either part of the solution or you're part of the problem? For people who think government is part of the problem, they sure seem to care a lot about politics. Government may not be the solution to all of society's problems, but getting rid of it is going to leave a hell of a void. How many of them would be willing to put in the hours doing voluntarily what the government does with our tax dollars? How many of them volunteer at soup kitchens, or donate to AIDS research, or research what they can do to make their lives more eco-friendly, etc. etc. Government exists because people in general are lazy, and Tea Party members don't stand out as being any less so. Just less willing to pay someone else to do the job for them.

I don't understand American politics. Luckily I'm one whole ocean away so I can safely ignore it most of the time.

Something that completely baffles me is how some politicians over there can get away with some of the stuff they say and/or do. It seems there's a new story every other day (at least for the past months leading up to this election). Stories that should ruin these peoples reputation and creditability as candidates/representatives for years, possibly permanently. Yet nothing happens, and next week it's pretty much forgotten because something else has happened.

Of course this only applies to a small amount of people that your media chooses to highlight which I then may or may not see. So my views on this is probably skewed in ways unimaginable.
I hope it's not as bad as I see it, because from here it looks like madness.
