If I recall correctly, people earlier, before Gold Rush came out, were talking about not being able to emulate the explosion at the end of Gold Rush because of... lack of cinematic tools, or something. Now, just curious, does that still hold true, and if it does, is it even remotely possible to just do a really hacky mock-explosion?

they did use a prop_dynamic that is animated for the explosion. So I guess the only way to create an explosion is to use modelling skills but I may be wrong.

Thats probably why 1) It looks really good and 2) you can change explosion sprites, so you use props

well you could make loads and loads of physbox brushes and tell them to not move, then just before you want an explosion enable their motion, then put in a phys_explosion and give it a really big value and add some smoke/fire particle stuff.
That would be the 'hacky'est way I can think of.
The best way would be to make the map completely then before the final release you export the last section into a modeling program, rip it to shreads then explode it. then export it as a model and bung it in at the end of your map.

I tried messing about with their own explosion in hammer and it looks like moving the info_targets does absolutely nothing :(

There's definitely no easy way to do it.

I'm going to try make one at the end of my pl map, i'm not looking forward to it. :D

what is the model name (or entity) that makes up the actually explosion? (not the debris)

fuck you youme thats my theory! :D

Anyway, I'm sure the explosion is an animation because it is always the same how the parts fall. This is done in an external program where they used some geometry as ref and than made it simulate the explosion.

Actually, I'm gonna mail valve about this. Because this is showing off to the mappers but we can't stay behind can't we :p
WE HAVE AWESOME EXPLOSIONS TO MAKE

EDIT: how you can do it is giving each model bones, and make it simulate, and export the "animation", its a shitty way but it would work. If you know max enough (reactor)

I heard that the cinematic editor was a 3rd party tool, licenced by Valve, which is why they can't release it.

I haven't seen anything on making your own particle effects either, perhaps its the same problem (though I would have thought particles were math based...)

Yes the 3rd party bit is probably the bit they use to make the simulation, but there are many programs you can use for that.
And as you can export sections of maps into various 3d programs I say wait untill your pl_ map is practically complete then move it over to a 3D program, explode it and export the animation back into hammer

I'm pretty sure I recall Valve using this for Half-Life 2 explosions. That's probably the program they used. It's not impossible to find online, for the crafty.

well that program looks quite powerful indeed, I'd love to get some kind of explosion for my payload map but I doubt it will happen :(

/me goes and sulks

Lol you can be sure they simulated that with their engine guys, havok physics. Its a good explosion but everybody can simulate it realtime actually. They just rammed it into an animation. (lighter for cpu)

oh site licenses are also availible, so that means we can buy it once (a bit expensiver) and than all premiums can have acces to it if they donate an extra 20$?
Would be a good idea though

Oh now that is a reason to donate, and also not a bad idea. I have a feeling a site license means a physical site though, like one office will have one site license

I have seen it in the custom pl_dustbowl map, so this is prove that all mappers can make it ;]

Is there any way to get the particleexplosion to work? I used the info_particle_system entity (copied from the original map) but ingame I got the message in the console that cinefx_goldrush couldn't be found.
